| puppy weights at 4 weeks Not sure this is where I should post this...I'm curious as what the average weight of a Yorkie puppy should be at 4 1/2 weeks. Not what the generic charts say, just what's average weights those that have had litters have actually experienced, assuming both parents weigh 5 1/2 pounds each, several generations back all weigh around 5 pounds (champion lines, research was done). I'm asking because one of our pups (first born boy) who weighed 6 ounces at birth now weighs 2 1/2 pounds! He plays, acts normal but is more shy than his lighter weight siblings (who weighed 4 1/2 and 5 oz at birth, currently a little over a pound). Mother is weaning, so he's not currently being over fed, but he was definitely a little piggy until recently. I'm asking because that seems pretty heavy to me and I thought maybe some of the experts here would know if he should be seen by a vet now rather than wait until it's vaccine time. (thyroid???) They were checked by a vet after birth and given a clean bill of health at that time. One breeder told me it's normal to weigh heavy the first month and after weaning they'll lose/maintain the weight. Any opinions? I have a tendency to worry over the little things and just want to make sure they are healthy and get some opinions before I run to the vet. Thanks to anyone with knowledge about these things. | Thanks to those that PM me. Doesn't look like too many have had a pup at 4 weeks weigh that much, so I guess I'll keep trying to find more info and that'll make me the go-to person on that issue. I'll let you know what I find out. Thanks again. Kendra |

Some pups will grow very quickly and stop, others will grow slowly and have growth spurtz after a year of age. Remember during the first year nutrition is the most important thing, so don't hold back food.

| Now, now. That good Italian food has a lot to do with it.

| I suppose! My brother and I were both fed differently. He got a bottle, I did not. She smoked with me, not him. He is 6'5 and 240. I am the runt of the litter at 5" 7" and 170. Damn! My goal is to get down to 160 but it is looking real hard! Marge also cooks Italian! |

| Genetics.......so, complicated. There are 7 of us girls and I'm the only slim one of the group. All my other sisters have weight problems, some control it better than others. But, for those that do, they have to work at it. Me I have to work at keeping the weight on. I'm the only one that took on my mother's build. After 11 children, she still weighed between 115 and 120 until the day she passed away. She smoked with all of us.

I guess I wonder has anyone here ever had a Yorkie pup to weigh in at 2 lbs, 4 oz at 4 and a half weeks of age? If so, where there any problems, did they stay the largest, how normal is that (taking into account the history of small to average size Yorkies - I realize a big one can pop up, just seems odd, all things considered), etc. Thanks again...Kendra | |

Breeding yorkies is one of the most difficult breeds to breed.
