| First (and hopefully last) Eclampsia experience Hi everyone. I haven't been on much in the past couple of months...i've been really busy, but the girl I got from Kathy Sliger is due on July 29th...I had to run to Salt Lake City this weekend. I left my oldest in charge (she has even whelped a litter before) and hurried down, to hurry back Well, all was perfect when I left, and still perfect last night. But, this morning Heather woke up to Angel panting and lying on the floor...she called me thinking she was in Labor to which i said, there is NO way. Had her give her some Nutri cal and took her to the vet right away. She was hypocalcemic and hypoglycemic...she had IV calcium and glucose and perked up pretty quickly. They are keeping her there til I get back. I feel terrible, but she was doing SO WELL that I figured if i hurried back, there would be no problems...guess that's what i get for thinking. So, my questions are...how can I prevent it from happening again til she delivers? I know to supplement after and always do...but have never before. The vet asked if I did because she said it predisposes them sometimes to eclampsia... Oh, and we are having 3 puppies...again. I am soooo nervous now. Before i was a tad nervous, but definitely not like now. Thanks. Kristie |

| Don't feel bad, eclampsia can come on so quickly it takes you by surprise. I would give her some cottage cheese in her food and make sure that kibble is available to her at night. Keep an eye on her and good luck with your upcoming whelp.

| Did your vet say what could have caused it? I'm curious what his instructions were since he also believes that supplementation can predispose them to preeclampsia. |

| Hi all, thanks for the good wishes. Angel is doing well...her calcium is still dropping on the low end at times so she has received IV calcium daily since going to the vets on Monday. Today, she switched over to Tums and we are waiting to see how her levels hold. She is happy and I think just wanting to go home. We really just all want to make sure her levels are high enough for a safe delivery...on top of hoping she will be able to not have a c section due to size. She has three large pups...so much for the 5 small pups i was hoping for lol. And ya, that small stud theory went right out the window too...granted he wasnt that small. 4.5lbs...but they aren't making very small babies together lol. Her temp has been staying down since this all started so she is being watched closely. She hasn't shown any signs of labor, but has built a very nice nest at the clinic! I'm hoping she will hold until Sunday, and then i'm going to bring her home. Kristie |
