This totally depends on the dog and how many puppies. The puppies already demand calcium from the mother before they are born. (bone formation) We could have lost the mother and all of her puppies if we had not been watching her very closely BEFORE the puppies were born. The mother developed preclampsia and needed an emergency injection of calcium about 5 days before the puppies were born. We had been giving her cheese along with puppy food and this was not enough. The vet told us to supplement before especiallly if we knew the litter would be large. (more demand on mama's body) The puppies will get what they need if it is available (calcium), but they depleted all of hers and almost caused her to die

I've been following this thread and I'm so glad you took little Mama to a new vet. It sounds like she got a really good checking out and all the news was good

How did I miss this thread? I just read through the whole thing and
thought momma would have had her pups by the end and it now looks
like tonight! Prayer's coming for an uneventful delivery. Hugs to momma.

Kelly, so glad Kiley is doing well and you changed vets. This vet sounds much more attentive, and you need all of the assurance that is possible right now.

I would think (and so did the new vet) that she would need the extra calcium right now since it is a large litter (def. 4 possible 6) and her age (shes almost 8). She gave me some tablets and told me to crush up one pill a day and put it on her food.

Shes doing good. Shes pacing, panting, then she will sit down and be really still for about 30-45 seconds to a minute then its back to pacing. When she tries to lay down she jumps right back up and starts it all over again.
