This totally depends on the dog and how many puppies. The puppies already demand calcium from the mother before they are born. (bone formation) We could have lost the mother and all of her puppies if we had not been watching her very closely BEFORE the puppies were born. The mother developed preclampsia and needed an emergency injection of calcium about 5 days before the puppies were born. We had been giving her cheese along with puppy food and this was not enough. The vet told us to supplement before especiallly if we knew the litter would be large. (more demand on mama's body) The puppies will get what they need if it is available (calcium), but they depleted all of hers and almost caused her to die
