| Help! Horney Yorkies! Hi everyone, My name is Tom and im new to the world of yorkie breeding. About a year ago we got an ACA Purebred yorkie from a local breeder and we loved him to death. all of our friends and family really love him also and more or less alot of them would like a puppy from him. After a ton of research we found a female that we thought would best fit his temperment, color, breeding... however she is still only 6 months old and in heat. At this point if he were to get her pregnant I know it would be a very bad thing, plus we dont even know if shes going to be big enough for him as hes oversized for the breed standard to say the least (12 lbs) she is gaining on him at 8lbs but we dont want them to breed until A shes old enough and B were sure it wont hurt her as we love her too. Here is my delema... She is on day 15 of her heat and he wants nothing more than to violate her in every way. We have tried bringing him 10 miles away to a friends house, but he howls mercilessly, if we put them together he tries to rape her.. We keep a belly band on him and a Doggie diaper on her, however he still just wants to breed. I dont want to put them together if its going to injure her, and it doesnt seem that i can calm him down until she is out of heat. i was wondering if any of you have any tips that can maybe take his mind off his mission? hes going to destroy my house, or at the very least his kennel if we dont do something soon. HEEEEEELP hehe im pulling out my hair. |

| You need to keep them in different rooms and just keep them completely away from each other until she is done with her heat. I just went thru this with my male with not just one, but two females that were in heat at around the same time. I plan to let them breed their next heats, but it was hard as Sydney, my male, cried and carried on. He survived though, and neither girl got pregnant. |

| Hes not just yelping and crying though... i wish it were that easy... he is smart enough to open his kennel... ive even zip tied it shut and he just gnaws off the zip ties then opens it... then he jumps a 3 1/2 foot baracade, runs up a flight of stairs... rips off his belly band and pounds on the door to the room shes in relentlessly (thank god he cant reach the knob because hes smart enough to open it) This dog can unscrew a lid to a econo size tub of milk bones and serve himself if we leave him unattended for more than 2 mins and they are within his jumping reach.. so needless to say sleep has not been an option for us... no matter how far apart we put them they actually both carry on... he howls, and she just whipers and barks... i mean i know its best for both of them but damn... he is one horney lil sucker and hes too damn smart for his own good. I have an offer from a local breeder to stud him. Would this calm him down? or just temporarily entertain him? is there something i can do to help him get his mind off the scent in the house or am i pretty much screwed until this heat is over? |

| YOu could take the female to someone elses house and let them keep her crated and on a leash when out to potty. There are pills for females in heat that stop the scent that the males pick up. |

| Belly bands will not prevent conception. The best thing to do would be to keep them completely seperated. Has your male ever been used for stud, I only ask because if he hasn't, his behavior is very unusual for a virgin male. You're wise to not want to breed your female until she's older (approximately 18 months of age). Since this breed is very unpredictable to size of the offspring. But, dependent on what you want to produce and because they are both beyond the Yorkie Standard) I'm not sure of breeding these 2 pups would be the best thing.

| Thanks for the tip on the pills ill call the vet today. He has never been used as a stud. Hes just a natural breeder i think lol... As for thier size and contaiminating the yorkie gene pool, im well aware they are big, but they are also extreamly healthy, and if you met the male when he wasnt howling like a mad man, you would see why we want to breed him. He is really a beloved dog in our local comunity, hes a mascot of sorts for our buisness, and there are alot of freinds and family that would kill for him or one of his puppies as a pet. So we decided to breed him to bring joy to those people with an outstanding and loyal pet. personally i dont care that they are big, were breeding for pets not for westminster, and each one of his offspring will be a gift, so were not even looking to profit off of this. Our vet also said hes so large partally because hes alot more muscular than most yorkies, we have fed him a strict diet of solid gold dog food, and he was raised by our labrador which i guess playing with her and wrestling made him alot stronger than normal. for his frame he would still be large but the vet said only 9 pounds if he were a typical yorkie... plus his mother was only 6 pounds and his father was 7, all his brothers and sisters are also much smaller, hes kind of a fluke from my understanding, which is fine i wouldnt have him any other way. but thanks for all the advice everyone and if anyone has more im all ears, i dont know how many more sleepless nights i can handle. |

| Sounds like you'll be spreading the Yorkie Love to some very lucky folks! My Brother lives in your neck of the woods------have you eaten at the Thai Gardens yet? We have one back in Keene, NH --where we were living and every time we go back we binge there--it's sooo good. If you haven't tried it yet, give it a go. Good luck with the breeding! Maybe we'll cross doggie paths someday up your way. |

| i totally agree with this. i think since the two are not within the breed standard, i would stay away from breeding them.

| they say to always put some vicks on the the tip of the females tale and to put it on the top of the males nose, something to try when they are in seperate rooms.

| Called 5 local vets and none have ever heard of a pill that can make females stop projecting hormones. They all said there is a pill you can give your little girl prior to her going in heat that will delay a heat incase she needs to show, but nothing to stop the odor they are aware of. So if you have a name for this pill it would help me out tremendously. the pill to delay the heat was called ovation in case anyone is wondering. As for the vicks trick i am willing to try anything at this point so i will definatly give it a go. As for everyone knocking me for breeding big yorkies, as ive said im not breeding them to show im breeding them for there temperment and the disire ppl have for their offspring as pets... i already have a waiting list 12 deep for thier puppies, so think what you want i love them anyway. Think of it this way, i may be contaiminating the gene pool, but at least im reading up on how to do it properly and asking some of the best minds in the industry here for help. Its not like im trying to make some super genetic freaks to inundate the show dog world with. im making larger than normal extreamly athletic, fun, and friendly yorkies that will be happy healthy and given outstanding homes. These dogs will never be show dogs, and i dont even really care about certifying the pups, they will be pets i will be giving to people free of charge. All of which will be spayed and nutered. once these two have filled their waiting list they too will be spayed and nuetered. so please im just asking for some help to bring a little joy to some loved ones lives. |
