Misty, It's tough the first time, but the benefits outweigh the negatives. I hate taking newborns to a vets to have it done, putting the dam under stress. Taking the pups to a public place...exposing them to who knows what.

I actually got really lucky with that aspect...a vet that makes house calls!

Of course, her having been a family friend for 15 years had a bit to do with that. Unfortunately, since the last litter, she's decided to retire, so I am currently without. I LOATHE the lady who took over her practice, so I am currently weighing my options elsewhere. Chaulk that up as one more on the to-do list

My vet will make house calls, but prefers his breeders to learn the docking process. His reasoning behind this is that he didn't go to vet school to learn to dock tails and he isn't proficient in what is required in each breed standard. So, he'll show us the basics on how to....Amazing vet, very breeder friendly. Anyway his office is a 30 mile drive for me...Whe he vet checks puppies, he makes sure it's after hours.

I currently take mine to my vet. But I just learned of a vet who actually numbs the tail first with an injection before docking them. I am going to try him next. Whether or not it actually helps, or numbs it at all, it still makes me feel easy thinking they are not feeling it.

I think I would not do it at all if it was not the standard. I love their long tails as much as their tiny nubs.

My plan was to take on doing it myself, but after watching it done with the twist method

there's just no way. I have WAY to much emotion to handle it

Maybe in 20 years

My vet numbed two and did two sans numbing. As I half expected, the reaction of the pups was the same regardless. Yet another reason that the "it's cruel and hurts" argument doesn't hold true as far as I am concerned. I think they reacted to being scared more to the actual discomfort of having their tails docked. Anyway, beside the point...

I'm still going to try it. Makes me feel better about it, whether they feel it or not. But to do it myself? That will take alot more years under my belt. With alot more education into it. Until then, I feel more comfortable with my vet. I just want the very best for the pups.

i agree with you. I think thhey just get scared at having something holding their little tails. Mine tried to scurry away too with the clamp in place. well, the first one did then I heldd on to the others. I almost lost my nerve on the first one I felt so sorry for him. After the first one, it was so much wasier and only took about five minutes or lesss to do them all. What the vets put them thru , disturbs them even more I am sure. poor little confused things. i so agree with mardlins post on taking them out to strange places and etc.

Oh I know!

I guess you could say........I'm just too "chicken" !!!! But I'm getting better! I can now "almost" watch when my husband gives them the vaccine!!!

Okay. more info that you asked. good luck and it's easy after the first one.

I wish you had some pictures to show us...it might make it easier to imagine each step...
