You're probably very right Misty, It being a regional thing......I do know that Texas shelters are over run with dogs, whatever breed they maybe. Could it be that we have so many puppy mills in Texas or in the states where you see an abundance of animals in shelters.

here we cant get rid of all the labs mixes and shepherd mixes, they usually stay until they pass away. luckly we use foster homes instead of large kennels or shelters so they get love and attention. puppies go fast and we have only had one or two small breeds and they never made it to the available list

It must be a regional thing. I think people that live in or near big metro cities have less room and time to care for a large dog. Many people live in condos, apts or houses with small yards. Therefore a smaller dog is much more suitable. Also when you have a large population of metro professionals, you have a large population of folks that want what will fit into their very fast paced and busy lifestyles. Again, the small breed dogs are much more suitable. Hence the small breed dogs, whether pure breed or designer breed go very fast in our animal shelters.
The only exception to this, that I have experienced, is with small pit bulls. Many people are not even remotely interested in a pit bull because of their reputation of being very aggressive. This is sad because the pit bulls are prejudged before the people even give them a chance. Many pit bulls are very aggressive, but some of them are docile sweethearts.

I think all our yorkie moms feel the same way when I say , you need to treat your puppies like they are your babies, would you send your baby to that guy?
These are our babies and we are very protective of them, however I do agree that you should not be breeding a mixed breed dog. A Yorkshire Terrier is a Yorshire Terrier and a Pomeranian is a pom period !. I am sure that they are very very cute... because both those breeds are but because people are mixing breeds and coming up with another name for them is not right ! ( just my opinion ) Keep the breed pure !

Here in MN the shelters are filled with Lab x, shep x . As a general rule I don't see many a mixed yorkies that I have thought was really cute. I don't know why people would want to wreck a yorkie coat by mixing. I have seen yorkiepoos , yorkie doxie's, and they just don't seem to mix well. ( in my opinion ) If you have a litter of mixes and can find great homes and don't charge alot it's not the end of the world. However these breeders that mix everything under the sun and call them rare and charge the big $$ should think again! They are mutts, period. Mutts are great I own two so I am not putting mixes down! I think that many of the mix breeders just by poor quality and breed. I doesn't matter the quality becasue there is no standard as to what they will or should look like. I just saw a ad for a Frenchie and s**tzu cross pups. the picture of the pups was dark so I couldn't see what it looked like ( thank God ) . they wanted a $500 deposit to hold and didn;t say a final price. they called them bulls**tzs. I mean , come on..........

You took the words right out of my mouth! I personally think that there are alot of people creating these dogs because it is an easy way out and a good way to cash in quick on a fad. There is no need to start with a quality representative of the originating breeds because the resulting offspring don't have to adhere to any set standard. Even if you do start out with good dogs, the result is what? When you are breeding an actual recognized breed, you have a set goal--a standard to meet. When you are cross breeding, what is your goal? There is no telling what the pups will look like.

I am sorry. I didn't mean to offend you.

If you look, this thread went off your original topic on 5/1--a week ago...and the subject wasn't changed by me, for the record. Ever since then, the topic has centered around a subject that has definately strayed from your original post. However, YOU have participated in that conversation. I am not sure why you are just now upset that the posts being made are not pertaining to your original post or why you felt the need to 'scold' me and tell me I have to start a new thread?

if you noticed i didnt name any names and there are several comments on this, if havent responded in a while because i have been busy. its not in your position to repremand me either. on when i spoke up on it or not.
People like the mix breeds and the people who dont need to face the facts. for example how long has yorkie-poos been around??? how did you get a yorkie??? how did you get a pomeranian? how did any of these dogs that are now recongized by akc come about. im really tired of hearing that that people who mix are ruining the breed. some of these mutts may one day be in an akc show. a perfect dogs isnt born, its created!
