Won't get into a debate. That's why I said with ears you'll find it's a matter of opinions. Thanks for coming along and proving me correct. Some people believe it's genetics, some circumstantial. Me I believe alot of times it is genetics, alot of times it is circumstances.

Not sure where in MO you live. However, there are 2 Breed Clubs there. The Yorkie Club of Greater Kansas City and one newly formed. Visit the YTCA.org page. By contacting one of these clubs you may find someone that will help mentor you. On the YTCA website, you will find the standard. Being confused about the standard is normal. It is open to interpretation......

If the sire is homozygous for erect ears ( doesn't carry the recessive gene) than the pups would all have erect ears but would carry the recessive gene for the next generation. If ears have been shaved and taped but have never come up than it's probably caused by the recessive gene.

check The Breeding For Better Dogs" website Dr Carmen Battaglia......

Keep in mind what Tami is stating here does not mean that all dogs with droopy ears have a genetic fault.

As a breeder you know that some of the problems are due to several other factors. So, quit stressing over that lil guy, they are going to come up with your coaxing..

thank you so much, mary. it's just that he has such a great pedigree and is exactly what I searched for over the past year. i have NEVER had to deal with ears like this before. Well, I had to tape my little girl from kandy's litter up. the one I kept back to bred, but they came right on up and are much larger than his. he loves his cottage cheese I am feeding him. i know he is still cutting teeth, too. On my furniture, on my pretties, on me, on anything he can get that little mouth on. LOL he is going back into the tape this weekend for a few more days. It has been suggested to me that I am 'fooling" with them too much so i left him out of the tape this week to ssee what he does.

My sources come from Ann Seranne a very respected breeder and exhibitor or Yorkies and my college genetics book. You don't have to believe anything, you're not the one who asked. If there is not a physical cause there's a genetic cause and these facts will help you to eliminate drop ears from your breeding program. You don't want to learn, don't listen.

Dee, His ears will probably be fine when he finishes teething. If not now you know how work with it if it is genetic. The joy of breeding your own show dog is a great resource, I believe Mary recommended it to me.

You are very right there and once the cartilage in the ears are broken due to too heavy hair for too long, they won't go up. But that is considered an environmental cause, ie not shaving them and is not a genetic cause. If handled properly they would have gone up. A genetic cause they will not go up no matter how much you tape and shave.

This is very interesting learning more about the ears. I just had a litter with three pups and one of the pups ears went up pretty early while the other two took longer. At 10 weeks one of them is still drooping and not standing well but her ears are the smallest of the three. Go figure? I was wondering if it was possible that the ear might have been damaged by some rough playing between the pups? I guess time will tell.
