Default How Does A Person Find A Mentor?

Hi all!!

Just a little about me: I am proudly owned by a 5 year old Yorkie named, Harley. He has shown me just how wonderful this breed is....spunky, fun, smart, sweet! I am a 34 year old mommy of 2 and wife of one awesome man. I am new to the Yorkie Talk board and I have enjoyed reading and learning more about this INCREDIBLE breed! Not too long ago, I had decided that I would truly love to breed Yorkies. It is not something that will happen for awhile....I want to learn learn learn whatever I can before I begin. I want to know that I am starting with excellent dogs because I want to always be known as someone that is completely reputable!!!!!!! My husband is my biggest supporter and he is all for me fulfilling my dream of raising this wonderful breed. I know that it will take time to learn what I will need to know and then there will be other things that I will have to learn as I go. What I would like to know is how I would go about getting a mentor. I do not want to venture out doing something so large as this without having a mentor. Like I said, I am in no hurry to start breeding....I need to know more before I begin. I want to raise Parti colored Yorkies and would love to show one day (I know they are not accepted in the show ring yet).

Thank you for taking the time to read this! Any info that you can provide to me, would be greatly appreciated!!

Tammy

Default mentor

Go to Dog show and show your face every chance you get...be willing to sit and watch..after the show you might introduce yoruself as a Yorkie lover there to learn. I would not mention future goals or Parti's. Start slow, expect nothing and absorb all you can..you can join an all breed club also...most Yorkie clubs are harder to join if you are a pet lover..but some are open to all..

Tammy,

Your mentioning parti colored, would not fare well in finding a mentor. Yorkshire Terrier Breeder/Exhibitors are passionate about the yorkshire terrier and your desires in that area would probably close the doors to you. Please forgive me if that sounds harsh, but it's a reality.

Attend dog shows, let breeders/exhibitors get to know you and trust you. Join an all breed club or a local specialty club. Learn everything you can about the yorkie and show world.

If you're interested in the Parti color you may want to join the Biewer forum

I do not think you sound harsh at all....I expect that some will not like that I want to breed this particular color. I love the Biewer, but like that fact that the parti markings are varied, as oppsed to the Biewer having markings in specific spots. I also like that the parti is AKC registered. Thank you for giving me advice....I can't wait to start attending dog shows. How would go about joining a breed and/or specialty club?

Thank you so much!!

go to either infodog.com or onofrio.com. As far as a local Yorkie Club, I don't think that would be the route for you to go, being your desire to breed parti color and you may find it difficult to find sponsors.

Tammy, The Biewer people are working hard at attempting to get their breed recognized by AKC and going about it in the correct manner. They are not attempting to associate the Biewer with the Yorkshire Terrier. The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America is now working on a disqualification; in particular addressing off colored yorkshire terriers. This is being done because of the people not breeding to standard to obtain the Parti color.

Default ????

The type of person that I would want as a mentor would be a person that loves and adores the Yorkie breed as I do. The more I think about it, though, the more I think that I will have a difficult time finding that person because of my desire to raise parti's. I know that I would be an excellent breeder....it is something that I would give my absolute all to and would cherish each and every little face that came into our lives! I am not sure that I will find the type of mentor that I would want because they would feel that I am not staying true to the breed....what do you guys think??? Now I am feeling a little torn on my choice of the parti.

You'e thinking is correct. Yorkshire Terrier reputable, responsible breeder exhibitors take the breed seriously and their sole purpose is to improve the breed. These people have spent years perfecting their lines and do not readily turn over any of their dogs and do not open up easily to a new comer. And even if they do their contracts have safe guards and a multitude of ties. They require to show the dog to it's Championship and coown the dog until you do and sometimes for the life of the dog. They maintain breeding rights and some even control who you breed to and who you sell the off spring to. It has become very stringent, because of people misusing their lines.

TAMMY-

You can have your cake and eat it too.
If the Yorkshire Terrier is truly the breed you love, then you should be able to accept (not necc. agree w/) the opinions of the breeders that have worked so hard before you to provide us w/ the Yorkshire Terrier and what it is today.
If you're wanting to take an "off" colored Yorkie and breed healthy lines that still adhere to the standard of the breed, except in that regard, then you STILL should go to shows and find out what you can about the Yorkshire Terrier as a whole. Develop an eye for faults and proper markings and coat texture so you will then know what you are producing to be of quality in regards to the standard.

I still think that you're talking semantics when it comes to the Biewer and the Parti. Take a look at both closely. I'd attend Biewer shows if you can and do the same there that you would at any AKC show w/ the Yorkies. It will do nothing but better you as a person in regards to the breed and therefore make you a better and simly more knowledgeable breeder.

It IS true that you'll have to hold your tongue in regards to some of your desires in where you want to go w/ the Yorkshire Terrier if you're wanting to breed Parti's, but even still, I think you'd only be detrimenting yourself and the breed if you didn't still take these steps to learn about the breed and just why it is that so many breeders out there aren't in line w/ you on this one.

I'd go to the shows, soak up what you can, take that home for the day and sleep on it. Who knows, your opinions might get stronger and then again, they may waiver.
Either way, it's great that you have a dream! Keep your chin up and ears open and you'll get there!

I missed that in the original post.
Otherwise I wouldnt of suggested the local yorkie club.

My opinion Tammy, do this the right way if you want to truely get into the yorkie breed. Breed to the standard of the yorkshire terrier.

I missed it too Chrissy, but read again after reading Pat's mention of the Parti color.....

I hope she rethinks her goal, as she does show a genuine interest in finding a mentor. That's the 1st step.

I have truly taken everything that you guys have said to me into great consideration! Like I said in my original post, I have really enjoyed Yorkie Talk because I have learned more about this great breed. I respect this breed and want to stay true to it and I, too, want to be respected one day as a wonderful Yorkie breeder. I am feeling that I can't do this like I would want if I am breeding a parti. I am going to seriously start reasearching and trying to learn more about the Biewer. I am so thankfol for the advice and input that you all have given to me!!!

I'm just curious s to why some of you feel that finding a reputable breeder to mentor you, and breeding parti colored yorkies are mutually exclusive.

Believe it or not there are some very reputable, qualified, experienced, breeders that are non judgemental.

Keep looking Tammy, and don't let a handfuj\l of people discourage you.

Tammy, you have been given a lot of very good advice. Good, reputable, qualified, experienced Yorkshire Terrier breeders are not being judgemental. They are simply upholding the breed standard and trying to help new comers in the correct way. Maybe parti people will someday have their own breed and breed standard like the Biewer people are trying to do and follow the same commitment to quality as the Yorkie breeders / exhibitors do.
