I know this is off topic - but I'm ALL for shutting down the terrible puppy mills out there - no dog should have to live outside in a cage 24/7 in the elements - and if the BYB's took over - I don't care as long as they keep the dogs safe and warm - anything is better than a puppy mill. edited cause I got too wordy

| I don't like this thread!! I breed yorkies and I have never said any of those things, yet my dogs are not show quality, just good old healthy pet quality dogs. They live in my house and sleep in my bed!! I don't charge an arm and a leg for them and I will not guarantee their size but always their health!!

I take in what everyone says and I figure it is like a pendulum -- there are some swinging to both extremes. But I just keep reading all the perspectives as I go through my decision process. I am thankful I found this site before jumping in to breeding. The books just do not tell it all. It gives me much to consider and lets me know I still have A LOT to learn! Luckily I have plenty of time. I feel better now though -- when I first started reading here I was afraid to even mention that I was considering breeding some day. Now I just go right ahead and say it (and then duck and run)

| [QUOTE=MissiesMommy;928825]CO_Yorkie_Momma- I'm not angry with the person who bred my dog or Yorkie breeders in general. Again, my goal is to prevent other people from making the same mistake I did, and to educate owners and potential owners about choosing and supporting breeders who actually breed to better the breed. It's ok if you don't agree with me or my posts, but that doesn't make me wrong because you don't agree. Also, when I refer to "greeders" I am NOT referring to breeders in general. I am referring to people who breed to make money specifically. Though the term could also encompass those that are selfish in their motives for breeding, and do it for their own reasons rather than for the well-being of their dog(s) and the breed in general. I was not just refering to this one post by you, I was refering to all of your posts where you have continued to put all breeders in a bad light, not just the puppymills and you did refer to all breeders as greeders. You tend to put us all in one category and believe me, there are several different categories. It is not that I have to agree or disagree with your points but like a couple people have said, it may just be the way you go about doing it and I am not the type of person to sit back and listen to it and not give my opinion too. The "greeders" arent going to be a part of this forum where they take almost every extra minute of their day trying to learn all they can from the people here and try and get as much knowledge from the show breeders here so we can only learn to do better. |

I feel like breeders get painted as two extremes here at YT....the PERFECT and the HORRIBLE. And in reality, there are all sorts of shades in between. You do not have to show, or strive for show quality, in order to be a good breeder.

hahahaha - I REALLY want to breed too - but don't. Doesn't mean I can't .... it just means I won't.... is THAT confusing enough ??? I leave that up to the pro's but I know IF I Did one day - just being on this site has offered me insight to the breeding world I'd have never had on my own - both good and bad aspects of it.

I think you are getting hobby breeders and such mixed up with puppy mills.. I think you should go back to the books to get more informed. The last time my Bell had a litter before this one (has one right now) was 20 months ago. I have my Lilly who I plan on breeding one day and she has never had a litter and she is 20 months old.. So not every breeder is a GREEDER (as you call it) What ever money I make goes right back into my dogs. So there is NO NASTY CYCLE AT MY HOUSE!!

All we can do is try to get the word out so that maybe the bad breeders will go out of business and the good breeders can be appriciated. I know unrealistic but I can dream can't I? lol Believe it or not we are on the same side.

| Lyz, while I also advocate adoption, I don't have a problem with people buying from breeders. Except that the people who buy from irresponsible breeders are adding to the overpopulation problem. Therefore, if we see the problem as a whole, you can't just advocate rescue, rescue, rescue! You have to advocate breeders who ethical and responsible (like you said, willing to take their puppies back at any point. Which is a small piece of the pie of a responsible breeder). Supporting breeders who aren't adds to the cycle of overpopulation and the Yorkie breed suffering as a whole. I can't find where I said only stupid people pay [that much] for mutts, but I have a feeling I said uneducated. People who are educated about choosing a good breeder and a healthy puppy don't support breeders who breed cross breeds. Do I need to give my schpeal on why no one who breeds mutts is responsible or ethical? My intent with the term uneducated wasn't to degrade anyone's intelligence at all. Uneducated people are like ignorant people, they just don't know because they haven't been told. We're all uneducated in different areas, there's nothing derogatory about that, and I apologize if you thought that's what I meant. Stupidity is the rejection of knowledge-- some "stupid" people buy mutts, too, but I'm not referring to them. Red98- It may seem better, I agree, but the fact is, many BYBs don't give anymore care or attention to their little money makers than a puppy mill would. The difference is all in the size of the operation. CO_Yorkie_Momma- You must've taken one of my statements about "greeders" in error, as, again, I don't see all breeders as greeders. The thing is, if I say greeders and a breeder here take offense, what does that say about the breeder? Is it my fault for using the term or is there something more to it that they respond that way? And the greeders sure as heck are here. I see them every time I come on. Jiggity, perhaps it would be helpful to define "show quality." What is it? Why would ANYONE breed for it? Why is it important or unimportant? Show quality, to me, is a standard. It's one of many standards that breeders should adhere to, to ensure that they are producing quality dogs that are good representatives of the breed. Why were shows and standards formed? To keep breeds pure, not to set one dog apart as "better" than another. I believe in keeping with breed standards because it's part of a whole standard that ensures the breedings that take are in the best interest of the dogs, and the breed as a whole. It gives healthy, focused, admirable purpose to breeding.
