Whelping Necessities

Ok so here is a question...

What am I missing for the big moment?

I have a milk supp. w/ bottle
towles
scale
dental floss
nail scissors for the cord
heating pad
pee pads for lining the bed
a premie booger sucker
and a lot of love for Daisy!

I know I am forgetting something though!

Daisy is in stage one labor. She is bouncing back and forth between the whelping box (she has slept in for 2 weeks) and her crate! The vet said it could still be 24 hours or so, I know I have time to get what I am missing, so if I could get y'alls help I would appreciate it.

Trash bags for disposing of placentas & Pee Pee Pads (I only let my girls eat one)
Iodine
Alcohol
Possibly Calsorb
Possibly Dopram
Possibly Oxytocin

I've never used dental floss, if you crimp the cord with the hemostat, then cut on the OPPOSITE side of the belly of the pup, then smoosh down on the cord with the towel, you should seal the cord. Make sure it is an inch or further from the belly of the pup.

where would I get the calsorb, dopram, or oxytocin?
is that provided at the vet? I know my vet said to bring her in for a shot of oxytocin if there are any complications.

Assuming this is your first litter, and you are not familiar with the use of Oxytocin then yes, that would be your best bet if you need it. Calsorb can be ordered from just about any vet supply, it is used 1. to help contractions along or 2. after birth if bitch is low on calcium...if she is showing signs of eclampisa, however, you need to get her to the vet in a hurry for a shot of calcium of you don't already have this on hand and know how to use it. Dopram is also from your vet, and it is used to help get puppies breathing if you have one that is gasping and would otherwise fade quickly. it is a shot given under the tongue.

My best piece of advise is don't let the bitch do everything herself, ASSIST as much as she will let you.

I took your advice and let her only eat one placenta... After my last e-mail to you I went to get my keys and out the door. Thought I better check on Daisy one more time before I go. Glad I did. She was pushing and had her first pup at 8:36 and had her what I assume to be her last at 10:34. She did great I did every thing I could that she would allow. After I tied with floss (no time to get hemostats) and cut it. She was still wanting to chew the cord i did discourge that and she was fine with it. She has done her evening duties and back to her crate with her new little family. Oh she had 2 strapping gentelmen and 2 dazzling young ladies! The order born with weights (B)5.2, (B)6.0, (G)6.0, & (G)4.5

DazzlinYT~What do you use the iodine for? (I'm just curious to see what your answer is compared to mine. )

BTW, I use the dental floss to tie the cords and it worked great--I'd seen 2 other breeders do this and folowed their lead. I can see though where hemostats would work much better if you were alone with the bitch during the whelp. The floss method would NOT have been possible with only one set of hands.

Yeah unfortunately I'm usually by myself, so floss is out for me, LOL Gosh I talk like I've bred a million litters, I actually have only had THREE in three years.. four will be later today sometime. My parents showed and bred cockers my whole growing up life, so I have been "whelper helper" since I was in a training bra.

As for iodine, to dab on the end of the cord.
