My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | Puppies born, now what? Ok, so my pups are 3 weeks old on Sunday What should be happening now? When do I worm them and what do I use and how? They can barely walk but are trying. Very shaky and fall alot. When do I start food? I noticed yesterday that they are peeing on their own as well as mom helping them. It was cute but I know theings are about to get messy! |

| You should start worming them now. We actually give the first very small dose at 2wks. Now you should see them start to try to walk around (or wobble around, lol) and they should continue to nurse. You can introduce some soft puppy gruel if you'd like. Mom will most likely eat it and that's quite all right. But many times you'll see them stand in the saucer and they do get a little. You should worm them with a veterinary approved wormer such as nemex or panacur. I've always used nemex for the first few wormings. Use a clean syringe and just gently open their mouth and squirt it in. Make sure you watch the funny expression on their faces the first time they "taste" something "new"... it's too cute. Good luck and congrats on your babies. |

| At 4 weeks you can soak puppy dry food with evaporated milk (dilute 50/50 with water) make it soupy and try..mien usually start eating from the dish aroudn 5 weeks..I have to keep mom away for several hours so they get hungry. I perfer mine to be weaned by 6 weeks..better for mom. I do not believe in routine worming of young puppies unless they have worms. Take a stool to the vet..worm meds are a harsh toxin, why run it through a tiny pup for good measure..I have the vet check stools at 6, 9 weeks. You can give NemexII at 10 to 12 weeks and it is very safe. I have seen too many very sick pups who were wormed at 3 to 6 weeks... Make a place for pottying..put down some paper so they can get out of their bed and learn good habits from the start, they will pee in their beds if there is no room for paper....good luck |

| Robbie and I agree to disagree and that is just fine..this happens with breeders...infact.. This is an area where breeders disagree...the reason I do not routinely worm is because I have not had a positive stool on an adult or puppy in dozens of years. If your bitch has not had problems, none in your kennel, then my vets always thought it wise to do a stool...no worms or parasites, no need to worm.. I have seen too many problems worming pups under 8 weeks or so..upset stomachs, vomiting, loose stools..do waht works for you and your litter..best wishes |

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | YorkieRose YorkieRose - I have a cleft Palet baby I'm bottle feeding. In my research I've read not to give them the mush, but to go right to hard food. Even a kitten growth food as its smaller for them to swallow. Preventing food to go up the sinuses and causing infection. Any advise in this area or ever delt with a cleft palet anyone????? |

| pup There is a YT member with a cleft pup that is doing very well...do an archive search or post in the general forum asking for them to respond...my last cleft was about 12 years ago and the vets were quick to put them down then...I wish you lots of good luck with your puppy..some do quite well..and being 3 weeks that is wonderful. |

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | Thanks so much I've made another post - hopefully they will respond. I was on another Forum Chazhound, but there are alot of mean people there, quick to judge, and not wanting to help. My cleft is actualy a Chi. But I also have 3 Yorkies. So I've decided to join YT. Everyone seems so nice and friendly here |

| Good info here YorkieRose. We have always started worming at 2 wks. I am very and I mean very funny when it comes to any kind of parasite(s). I have a child who plays on hands and knees on the same floors with my puppies. We haven't had any problems with our routine wormings and I know alot of people do things differently. |

| Pat I agree I dont begin worming (if at all now) until 6 weeks old. I routinely wormed 4-6-8 weeks but never found they had worms. I began fecal testing at 6 weeks, if clear no reason to put the little ones through it. Although I must admit last litter they were looking a bit puppy bloated so I did one worming and didnt find a thing, should have trusted the fecal

| Breny, How long have you been breeding? You said you have a little chi puppy. Good luck with it, I hope it thrives. As far as the worming question you had, you've got a lot of good here, but always consult your vet regardless. Best wishes! |

| here's the link to the thread about the cleft palate pup http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...t=cleft+palate I also do not worm before 7 weeks. I like to do worming on odd weeks so they are not dealing with that and vaccines at the same time, so worming 7,9,11....if needed, vaccines on 8,12,16.

| I also do not feel wormings are without complications and think the recommended worming guidelines are too much for Yorkie pups. The cleft palate baby's name is Joker. Do a search for Joker and the owner should be able to provide you with a lot of information. |
