You can paint their back toenails. Leave the oldest boy and girl unpainted and then paint the other two. I usually have only 2 or 3 so I can usually tell them apart without marking. I also don't like the use of string or ribbon. Haven't ever tried it, but it only makes sense that it could become tangled. Oh, BTW haven't heard the sexes yet???

OK, CONFESSION...I haven't really looked, and I am not sure I know what I am looking for. LOL! Is it the obvious I should be looking for, or is it more discreet? I just weighed them and two are 5 oz and two are 4 oz. Is that normal weight?

LOL, yes, it is obvious. The little girls will have their peepee very close to the anus. The little boy's weewee will be closer to the umbilical cord. The weights are good. How big are Mom and Dad? Does your vet want you to come down tomorrow? If not and all seems fine, I would just give the office a call and tell them what the puppies weigh and see when they want to remove the dew claws and dock the tails (3 - 5 days). I really hate exposing them to anything when it is not absolutely necessary.

LOL! I'll have to look then. I have tried not to go in there too much because the Mom is finally feeding and sitting with them. They are all happy with her there and crying when she gets out of the box. Should we bring at least Mom in to the Vet tomorrow to be checked out? Are there any side affects to the dock tail and dew claws removal? Does that pose any risk? | |

Reading the whelping description you gave, I don't think you have to worry about any retained placentas. You might check Mom's temperature and if all is well there then I don't really see the need. I have never heard of any risks associated with dew claw removal or tail docking, but the tail docking is, of course, controversial. I actually don't like it, but it is what people expect in this country (many countries have banned it). I would have to say I'm against tail docking, but do it, if that makes any sense at all. I make my husband go in with them for that and I stay in the waiting room! I own one that has her natural tail and it is very cute, but it does create an optical illusion, making her look longer in body. I love to see it wag! This is just going to have to be a decision you make on your own.
