| Help with 6 day old puppy! Hi all, Hoping You can send me some tips on how to get some weight on this little guy. I have been bottle feeding him for 6 days, Mom has very small nipples and he tried hard to latch on but couldn't. He is eating Esbilac and I have added nutrical for extra calories. I'm feeding him every 1 and 1/2 hours during the day and 2 and 1/2 hours at night ( I gotta get some kind of rest). Called the vet and he said I'm doing everything I possibly can and to continue, but he hasn't gained much all week and I'm concerned for him, he is 3 ounces from 2 3/4 at birth. Just curious if any of you have tried something else and it worked. |

| update When I got up last night with the pup he was actually latched on ! so I let him stay that way for a while then bottle fed him. I know after 7 days mom is pretty dried up but I think if he keeps at it her milk will come back in. I think he figured out he has to open wider. I'm going to try to get him to latch on before every feeding. By the way he weighed 3 1/8 ounces this morning!! I'm curious why more breeders haven't replied....? Do they let these puppies fade away because it is exhausting and extremely time consuming work or do they take responsibility for the little lives they bring into this world?? I can't have been the only breeder this has happened to. I'm not trying to start a frenzy here but isn't that why we have this forum to help each other out?

| sorry for not responding sooner, I check in as I can. I will assume since you said she was drying up that there were no other pups in this litter? If you can get him to continue latching on, that will be the best thing, hopefully she will stimulate him to nurse frequently, I would get him on every hour if possible, and if he doesn't seem to be getting anywhere continue the supplemental feedings. There are some recipes for supplements at sites online this one has a few options http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/bre...lefeeding2.htm

| Yes, he is the only one, he had a brother but he got stuck in the birth canal breech and I worked on him for 20 minutes with no response. So you see why I am bound and determined not to lose this little guy?
