| Question for breeders This probably sounds really silly. But was wondering if you all could solve a dispute my husband and I are having. We got into a discussion last night about breeding. We just got our first yorkie and already have had 5 people ask us if we are planning on breeding and if so, they wanted to go ahead and put a deposit down now My pup is only 12 weeks old! Anyway, we were just discussing it and my hubby said he couldn't stand the smell. How bad does having newborn pups and all stink? We don't really have an extra room to put them in as our house is good size but we dont' have a laundry room or anything. We do have a spare bedroom... But was just wondering if anyone could let me know how bad of an odor it is to have pups and if there was any way that you have found to cut down on that odor. My hubby is convinced that you can't get the smell out of your house and because of that, it would hurt our resale value of our house if we move in the future. Thanks! |

| The smell is not bad if you can get their messes cleaned up pretty quickly and keep them clean. Yes, you can smell "puppies" but it is not a nauseating, unsanitary stench and I can assure you, it certainly WILL go away...you could have walked into my house a day or so after our last pup was gone and not be able to tel there were ever any there. |

| Not a breeder, BUT... I've whelped A TON of litters for various breeders and I'm of the opinion that especially w/ small breeds (averaging about 2-5 pups) that once weaning begins, you'll need to get their fecal matter and urine cleaned up pretty quick, but otherwise the smell isn't overwhelming and the messes aren't that big!! No biggie imo. If it were a breed over say, 8 lbs. then yeah, I'd say don't do it for your husbands sake. |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Bama and YorkieK9 have both brought up some very good points. There is a smell associated with pups. During the whelping process, it isn't the most pleasant. Gracie also had black tar poop that smelled so bad I wanted to vomit...that was more than likely eating the placenta with each pup. She had the runny tar poop on my son's carpet and I had to cut that piece of carpet out. Thank goodness it's under his bed and we're going to replace carpet this year anyway. When the pups get to walking stage, even though mom will generally keep the area clean, it still gets an odor to it. I moved our litter to the kitchen where it's easier to keep clean. Do I have a smell now, no I do not.

| the trick is to use a great cleaner I use odoban...it smells wonderful...the first three to four weeks you smell little to nothing except puppy breath when they yawn and kiss you which I can not get enough of. I regulally use the odoban but once they begin the pee and poo process and mom doesnt clean up after them any longer get the odoban out and the disposable pads..its all controlable. you have plenty of time to make this decision and to learn everything you can about breeding these precious babies. Until then enjoy your new baby!!
