Bama and YorkieK9 have both brought up some very good points. There is a smell associated with pups. During the whelping process, it isn't the most pleasant. Gracie also had black tar poop that smelled so bad I wanted to vomit...that was more than likely eating the placenta with each pup. She had the runny tar poop on my son's carpet and I had to cut that piece of carpet out. Thank goodness it's under his bed and we're going to replace carpet this year anyway.

When the pups get to walking stage, even though mom will generally keep the area clean, it still gets an odor to it. I moved our litter to the kitchen where it's easier to keep clean. Do I have a smell now, no I do not.
