| Those were some good size pups, and yes, the color is rare. Kimberley gave you good links on that. I just wanted to applaud you on being well prepared. Good job.

p.s. I do not remember if the mom's weight has been posted but if she is under 6 pounds, I would suggest you start supplementing her with 200-400mgm of elemental calcium a day. Watch her closely for signs of eclampsia. Having 3 large ones like these is as bad as several smaller ones. They can drain the mom of milk and calcium. I trust you have read up on eclampsia, its onset, symptoms and the necessity of immediate vet treatment. Good Luck with the little beasties..

I read through your post the other day and was wondering how Daisy was doing. Congratulations!! How beautiful your puppies are and how lovely their mom. It sounds like you had quite an exciting morning yesterday! You must feel like you're on top of the world with so many sweet yorkies. Again, congrats! Has Daisy's brother seen the pups yet? I'm wondering what he thinks of all this?

Whew, it's been a whirlwind couple of days! Just a quick update on the puppies and I'll launch into the rest of what's going on as I think I have some good information to pass along: First, the two red colored puppies are males and the black one is a female--and they are THRIVING. As of last night, they'd gained a full ounce, which is good news. There was some initial worry that Daisy wouldn't care for them (from the vet) but I knew different and I was right. I know my girl and she's a fantastic mom and proudly runs back and forth from me to the cage wanting me to praise the puppies whenever I go to her daycare provider. (We have the whole family at my gran's house so that they get 24/7 supervision). For those of you worried about the calcium supplements, Daisy's normal weight is around 6.5 lbs (give or take an ounce or two) and I am giving her 1/2 tums with her food and 2-3 ounces of dog milk replacer every day (on the recommendation of my vet) to supplement the puppy food/hamburger/egg/rice mixture that we've been feeding her to bolster her blood count. Which brings me to the information I'd like to share with you: Because Daisy delivered outside of normal office hours, we had to see an emergency vet (not our normal veterinarian). Having only had experience with our normal vet, I expected that the professional I was dealing with had Daisy's best interests at heart and would do everything possible to ensure her well being. I was apparently incorrect in that assumption. When I took her in, the vet asked if I wanted her to be spayed if there was trauma to the uterus. I specifically asked what, if any, further complications I could expect and she told me that the recovery would likely be easier. I went ahead and authorized her to spay her if there was any damage to the uterus. Turns out that there was no damage to her uterus, but she went ahead and spayed her anyway, because, in her opinion, if she were bred again and had another breach puppy that presented tail first she could have the same trouble. I am not concerned about the loss of her reproductive ability--I would not have bred her again anyway--what I am concerned about is the fact that spaying her following the C-section needlessly put her in jeopardy. We spent a scary two days while Daisy had a seriously low blood count. Had the uterus been left intact, this would not have been as large an issue. My regular vet was aghast that this emergency vet callously took it upon herself to decide Daisy's reproductive future for me--and endangered her life in the process--all in pursuit of some activist "spay and neuter" agenda. In his opinion, spaying during pregnancy or while the animal is in heat presents this risk of severe blood loss and should not be done unless it's absolutely necessary. While I'm not going to pursue legal recourse, since Daisy and the kids are fine, the emergency vet "graciously" decided to waive the cost of the follow-up care, and her blood count is back up, I must stress to everyone reading this that, in the terror of the moment, if you're forced to deal with a vet that you are unfamiliar with, it's a good idea to get your own vet involved somehow. Generally his/her office can get him/her at home and many are more than happy to consult with the individual who is caring for your animal. Had the outcome been different, I shudder to think what I would have been capable of doing to this person. It's a weight of risks to have your dog spayed at the same time as a C-section (additional anasthesia for a future surgery versus significant blood-loss). I think I probably would have picked the former if I'd been given the choice. In any case, I'll start a thread on the nursery forum and keep it updated with pictures. We're photographing them daily and charting their weight. Thanks again for all of the support and encouragement! We (Daisy, the kids, and I) are deeply grateful! All of our best to you and your Yorkie families (oh, and your people families, too)! Last edited by JeremyPack; 04-06-2006 at 10:58 AM.

They are chocolate look red when born. I had a pup like that i thought she was also red. I still have her she is tan all over with her face light cream color. She's very different and some people pay a lot of money for them being different. But some say they shouldn't be bred again if they carry the different color gene. good luck with your little one's they are beautiful.
