Question about crying 2wk old I have a two week old pup that is crying alot today and it is worrying me. She gained this morning and I have seen her nurse and she has been the one in the bunch to be the crier since birth but- just not this much. I called my vet who said not to be too worried and maybe they will check her Monday - they also said if she gets worse they will see her sooner - but I just don't know!! Any ideas? Thanks to anyone who responds!

OMG, I would worry. If the puppy is warm with its mom who is peeing and pooping it, nursing and wiggling in its sleep (a VERY GOOD SIGN!) it might just be having an off day. If, on the other hand, it has a full tummy and mom is doing all those things and it is crying with a high pitched cry it might be something to have checked. Failing Puppy Syndrome can come on and kill a baby in 24 hours if not given vet care. Sometimes, no matter what you do the puppy will fail but it could be something really simple. Since the week-end is coming, I would not take a chance of waiting and maybe not finding a vet open on Sat or Sun. I do not mean to alarm you, but, FPS is always a concern of mine.. Best of luck with the little one. BTW, is she the runt of the litter? And one other thought,, maybe BeneBac or acidophilus would help. AND, has the mom had any food that is different and could be causing tummy pains? Like when nursing hoomans eat gas-causing veggies and the baby gets the tummy ache cause the substances go thru the milk.. Again, just some thoughts. I am sure others will add more..

Thank you all for responding so quickly. Yes she is the smallest of the three, she weighs 8 and a 1/4 oz then 9 and 3/4 and then 11 and 5/8 oz. and mom is doing all the right stuff. It's not a persistant high pitched cry it's more of like a whiny cry. Not like she is in a great deal of pain just like something is bothering her. She seems to have settled a little now and is sleeping with one of her sisters. She has always been the one making noise I gave mom one of the meatballs that the recipe was posted for on here - but those are pretty bland ingredients and if that's it obviously it doesn't bother the other two. I am always one to go on the side of caution and if she is not settled down to normal in the next little while I will be off to our vet!! In fact I think I am going to go with her now. Please keep her in your thoughts and hopefully I am just a nervous nelly!!! I'll post when we get back!

Well we went to the vet and they couldn't really tell me anything. They gave her some subcutaneous fluid - 6 ml., checked for parasites and found none and peed and poop'd her. She had a lot of poop so they think this may be why she was uncomfortable, so I will do it again for her later in case mom just isn't getting it all. Since we have been back she has not cried and has been steadily nursing. So hopefully that is all it was!! I HOPE so anyway -I know I will be on gaurd tonight though!!

So glad to hear that!! Did the vet have any thoughts about why the peeing and pooping is not progressing as the others..

No just that maybe mom just wasn't getting it all. Last night she did though! After she nursed - for a good loooong time - she cleaned the heck out of her little bottom and then I took her and couldn't get anything - there was a piece of dried poop kind of a little flat flap that you wouldn't be able to feel with touching her with bare fingers though and I used the warm cloth and got it off. I am thinking that maybe that is why mom couldn't get it all and the vet maybe loosened it up and that's why he could get poop but since he didn't touch her with a bare finger didn't know that there was anything else there. I don't know just a thought - but she is just fine at the moment no crying last night or this morning and she had a good gain and never lost anything do to this whole thing so that's a positive sign.
