Question Question about yorkie's size

I sort of feel stupid for having to ask this question, but I really am curious, and I feel like this is the place to ask.
I have an 8 month old yorkie and he weighs 3 1/2 pounds, and he is 7 inches tall, and 12 inches long. Is he done growing?? And if he is done growing, does that mean he's a tiny or a standard?? Just wanting to know. This is my first yorkie, and there are a lot of things I don't know..
If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it. Thanks Heather

A standard yourkie is approx 6 lbs. I don't think its safe to say that your yorkie has stopped growing. I heard some yorkies are still growing after a year.

I was told that I have a "toy" yorkie but I hope he's at least 5lbs to ensure his health. I love tiny dogs but at this point, I just want my Zoe to be healthy.

Standard is anything under 7 lbs. While he fits the standard weight size, his measurements are off. By show standards, they should be 9 X 9. Though not every yorkie meets this standard, a good breeder will try to get as close to the standard as they can. Your baby sounds like he's fine boned with those measurements and weight.

Also, he may be through growing height and length size but they can still pack on the weight after that.

sounds like your measurement you did it from the tip of his nose to the end of his bum...for proper measuring take it from the back of the neck to the end of his bum...the paw to the top of his back for his height.

Standard is not to exceed 7lbs.

As to your question about is he done growing most slow down or stop at about 6-7 months some continue for a full year. I would think your kid would be 4-4.5lbs at best and could be done all together all depends on his genetics!

I did measure his length wrong, thanks for the corrections. I think i am going to take him to the vet and have him weighed there, and measured and all of that. Thank you for the advise!!!

Default weight

I don't see how anyone can tell what a dog is going to weigh. My husband breeds Field Champion Beagles. We can breed two 13 inch dogs (that is the class they show in), when the pups are ready to sell, people will ask, "how big do you think they will be"? All my husband can do is tell them the size of the parents. More than once, we have had people call and bring the dog back because it grew to 17 inches and cannot be shown. They make good hunting dogs at that size but that's about all.

I have got so I hold my breath every time I take Ceeby to the vet. I purchased him for a "tiny". last week I took him in to be weighed on his birthday and he already weighed 3 pounds. Yesterday, I took him in because he has been sick and not eating. Guess what? He weighed 3.4. That is after days of not eating and vomiting and diarreha. he will be six months old soon and if he doesn't slow down he might get to six or seven pounds. He is very thin.

Reading this made me curious as to what Ransom's measurements are.

He is from the neck to the butt 9 inches, and from his paw (front) to the top is 8 inches. So he is short I wonder? He weighed in last week at his vet's office 3.5 lbs.

Im stumped by the 9 x 9 . If this is the requirement for show standards, doesnt that mean there are sooooo many tiny Yorkies in the ring?? Or is the 9 x 9 the starting point and going up from there??

I'm sorry this all confuses me, LOL.

Not a dumb question. In some of the breeds a measurement can be done in the ring. I have yet in 30 years seen a judge take out a tape and measure a yorkie to see if they are 9 x 9. What they will look for" is the dog in proportion." When you go to a show is is clear that some dogs are taller then others.

Does he look square? This means legs and back are close to the same. They do not want to see a basset hound type- a long back and short legs. Or real long legs and a short back.

Remember the perfect dog does not exist- and never has. We all just keep striving to breed that one and only perfect one.

Thank you for explaining this to me. Ransom does look square. I can compare him to Schatzie who is very long and not so much in proportion. I have also compared him to my friends Yorkie who is smaller than Schatzie and was easier to make a comparison. Atleast both Ransom and Schatzie think they are perfect, LOL.

You are so right, there is no perfection and never will be. But it is nice to keep striving.

I do not measure my dogs. IMHO I think that is going to far. IMHO If you want a perfect 9 x 9 you are too picky. That is the least of the things to worry about when purchasing a puppy. I doubt if many Champions are a perfect 9 x 9.

I have had only one person ask me to measure a dog. They wanted all kinds of silly measurements- which don't mean a thing on a puppy. What I look for is proportion- long back, short back, long legs, short legs, long neck, short neck.
When you look at that mix above you can see why you don't need to take the tape measure out. With your eyes you can tell if your babies have gor the right look. When you show you try and get as close a look as you can.
This is why a certain puppy may be placed as a pet by a breeder- they feel the back is a little short or long- you get the point. The average person who buys a pet will not be able to pick this fault out. When the fault is in combination with another saya long back and short legs then it is more noticeable to the public. Breeders try and put the best forward when they go into the ring they want your praise and respect for that kid that they have produced and are proud of the breeding program that they have.

I would just like to add to this that "frame", height and length, and how proportional those are is VERY important on a breeding female. My understanding is that you do not want long and narrow as the birth canal may not accomodate the puppies well.

So, if you considering breeding a female, please have a reproductive specialist check the female's frame to see if it is appropriate for breeding and, if you are buying a dog that you are considering breeding make sure it is not longer than it is tall.

Oh crap, now I'm confused! Heather, is you pup a boy or a girl? Are you going to breed him? Do you have a 'her' that you plan on breeding?
Very interesting info on size estimates and measurements though...

Breeding ? I didn't see where Heather said she planed to breed - I read her post with the understanding she was looking for a weight and size guess ?

Heather - at 8 months - he does sound pretty little at 3.5 pounds - but 12 " sounds a little long for that weight - are you measureing correctly ? I have a hard time with my girls getting good measurements -

Do you have pictures of him ? I bet he's just adorable ....
