| Heat cycle smells! Hi, my little Mia is 11 months old and just coming into her first heat cycle. She is not bleeding yet, but she is swollen, and licking herself a lot. She has also gotten more clingy and spends more time lying around than playing. She is eating, but not as enthusiastically as usual, and is using the potty pads as usual. This morning and last night she was making noises that sounded cat-like. Don't know how to describe them otherwise. My question is, does the heat cycle make them more gassy? I haven't HEARD any passing of gas, but she smells terrible, and it comes in waves rather than being a constant smell. It is over-powering! Is this normal? |

| If she is passing gas it would probably not be related to her coming in heat but perhaps she has a upset tummy. What do you feed her? Have you added anything new to her diet? How do her stools look?

| Thank you for replying. I did change the flavor of the wet food I normally give her, but I have used that flavor occasionally in the past and did not have this problem. She did do a really smelly BM today though, and seems to be more like herself now, and doesn't smell. :-) Glad to know that is what it was! :-) |

| I am glad things are a bit better. It can effected their stool and tummy if you switch food types. For example if you are switched from a chicken based food to a beef based food you have to do it slowly. My yorkies don't do well with dog foods with beef. Do you have other dogs in your house? Keep a close eye on your girl if she is coming in heat. The heat cycle lasts three weeks. Will you be getting her spayed after her heat cycle? Ideally you would wait about two months after her heat cycle to get her spayed. While they are in heat and the two months following a heat their personalities do change so be prepared for that.

| Thank you for that information. Mia is the only dog we have EVER had, so I feel like a real novice. Our plan is to breed her--LONG STORY. Basically, we got her from a breeder, who gave us a really good deal on her if we would agree to breed her back to one of his studs and give him pick of the litter. At the time, I didn't really know anything, but was willing, and we fell in love with her when we saw her. I am more apprehensive now that I know more, and presently, Mia is only 3.7lbs. I would not breed her if she is under 5 lbs., and I don't think the breeder we got her from would want us to, either, but I don't know where that leaves us regarding our agreement. It is tricky, and I'm hoping she does eventually get over 5 lbs. so that it will not be a concern. I already do have more people seriously asking for puppies than she would be able to produce in a litter, so at least that is comforting. I am home most days, so that is also good. Mia is also pee-pad trained, and it has been very snowy and cold in NJ, so she will not be out around other dogs while in heat. I didn't know about the personality change, so I will keep a watch on that. She has been more clingy, but have not seen much blood at all, so is that something that could possibly be missed because she is cleaning herself, or will I definitely know when she really starts the heat cycle? |

| If you little girl is only 3.7 lbs at 11 months then I do not expect her to ever be big enough to breed. There are so many dangers in breeding small yorkies. You might just let the breeder know that you want to get her spayed. Unspayed females are at risk of getting pyometra. Some females don't bleed much with their first heat and she could be just keeping herself extra clean. If you have seen any blood at all then she is definitely in heat. I have been seeing pictures of all the snow in your area. It has been a very cold and snowy winter for many. The snow looks beautiful but I sure would not want that much.
