How many times for AI I am debating doing AI on my female. I also own the male and this is her second heat. He is 16 months old and is just not interested very much. This is day 8 of her cycle and the vet said to bring them in. I am curious if those of you who have used this method take the bitch in more than once for the service or if once is enough? Is it possible after doing this, that he might become more interested on his own?

Ai More often then not a male started at stud by AI will only breed by AI. There are exceptions of course. Once a male is doing well at breeding, there is no reason not to AI if you perfer... At eight days she is still early..some may not show interest for a few more days.

I have not had to resort to AI as of yet. I am sorry I can't help answer your question. As for you bitch, did your vet run a progestrone on her? That will tell where she is in her cycle. Sounds rather early but that's not impossible. I just bred a bitch that had a progestrone done and she's peaked at day 7. Have your vet run a progestrone regardless is what I would suggest! Good luck!

Ai Yes, it is wise to test the progestrone levels when using AI, because AI conception rate is lower then natural breeding rates.

Thank you for the replys. I took her in a couple of hours ago, my vet didn't even ask about testing her progesterone he just asked what day of her cycle she was on.....so now I know to ask for the test if I do this again. Here is what happened.....NOTHING!!!! I love my little boy to pieces and I have yet to find another male in my area that I am even interested in using instead of him, so if he can't figure it out this time I think I will give it one more cycle and then have him fixed. I am keeping them separated now for 24 hours and then seeing if that peeks his interest and I know it is still early in her cycle but have any of you ever had a "stud" that just didn't want to "stud"? I think maybe he is gay lol... I do baby him a lot and he is the submissive one, not my female. I am just frustrated after researching, testing, looking around to find the right one and now I might be back to square one

stud Some males are born studs, others need to learn. Don't give up on him. What you need is a few proven bitches to get him started..he may not breed with your girl at first until he is proven with an outside female. he needs several ties in a row..not months and months apart. A stud potential should never be allowed to be bullied or bossy by a female..he needs to feel macho. GOOD LUCK

I really value your advice, so let me just thank you up front for responding to my posts as this forum is essentially my "mentor" as there are not any close by. When you say he shouldn't be bullied, how do I prevent this now? I have raised the two together and she has been the boss from day one. I thought when one was the alpha dog there wasn't really anything you could do to change that. They are actually very loving and affectionate with each other and they are driving me crazy because I have one in a seperate room so they keep crying for each other but I am determined to do what I can to get this to work. I have several people interested in using Dash, but only one has a bitch that has had a litter. She had her litter in June of last year and has not had a heat cycle yet. She was going to wait out one cycle before breeding her again, but with this many months in between would it be a bad idea to breed her again? I would like to see if an experienced bitch would make a difference and I don't really know how else to find one.

OK, update.... I called my friend with the female who has already had a litter, and miracle of all miracles, she is in heat right now. We talked to the vet and he said it would be fine to try to breed her again as it has been 8 months since she had her last litter. She brought her over last night and within 15 minutes my little boy became a man!! She is bringing her by again tonite for one more go round. I did think that this might perk his interest in Libby, but it hasn't. He does sniff her and lick her and then he goes and gets his rope toy and brings it to her to play.... So this is what I am thinking for her next heat cycle, when she comes into heat I will take her to my mom's house for the first 6 or 7 days and then when she seems receptive bring her home for a couple hours and then take her away again. I am thinking that maybe they are just to familiar with each other or something so if I remove her for a few days then he might be more excited when he sees her. I will also look around for a back-up stud just in case but I really don't want to use one if I don't have to. I guess there is still a chance they will hook up before her cycle is done, but I don't have my hopes up. I am actually THRILLED that he figured it out on the other female, at least I know he's not gay

| Okay, so you know that everydog's cycle is different and that your male in not gay. Here is a trick that I learned to help tell if your girl is ready. Take a Q-tip and insert the end into her vulva (you don't have to go in too far) and check her discharge. If it is red or dark pink she isn't quite ready, your male might not respond until it is very light pink. Also if it is light pink and he isn't responding to her, let him sniff the Q-tip. That is what I used with my stud dog to collect from him when doing AI. It's alot easier than having to try to have him sniff the girl. Best of luck.

| She really might not be ready as of yet. 8 days is pretty early and "most" or the average days are 10-12 after the bleeding has started. He knows what to do so just let them go and I wouldn't worry at all..you always have next heat cycle too. Here are a few suggestions...you could keep them apart for a while in diff rooms, keep them apart, but where they can see each other, or what my studs FAV is to put the girl panties on so he cant get to it for like a half an hour..take them off and WATCH OUT! LOL

I do think it was too early in her cycle. They actually tied Sunday night and then again on Monday night. I have kept him wrapped up since then and I think she is about done letting him show any interest now. So hopefully we are looking at March 12 for puppies!! Now I just get to worry and fret and hope it all goes well, but that goes with it right?
