Okay, so you know that everydog's cycle is different and that your male in not gay. Here is a trick that I learned to help tell if your girl is ready. Take a Q-tip and insert the end into her vulva (you don't have to go in too far) and check her discharge. If it is red or dark pink she isn't quite ready, your male might not respond until it is very light pink. Also if it is light pink and he isn't responding to her, let him sniff the Q-tip. That is what I used with my stud dog to collect from him when doing AI. It's alot easier than having to try to have him sniff the girl.
