per AKC's Website: "The earliest record of a Yorkshire Terrier born in the United States dates to 1872. Classes for the breed have been offered at all shows since 1878. Early shows divided the classes by weight - under 5 pounds and 5 pounds and over. Size, however, soon settled down to an average of between 3 and 7 pounds, resulting in only one class being offered in later shows." Its sad that we are losing the larger breed BC most breeders think they have to breed within the standers and every yorkie should be a show yorkie. This is not keeping the breed going. Pure is pure, no way arounds it. The whole topic got started BC someone made the comment that its not under 7LB and should be fixed. I think that is wrong info. |
I am a little confused as to why you think larger yorkie's are rare. If you read here you will see there are probably more or as many anyway that are larger than 7lbs as there are standard size. |
the point was ppl are saying you should not breed them bc they do not meet AKC or other "STANDERDS" and this is simply not true. thats killing the breed. I was also referring to 10+ Yorkies can be up to 15 pounds many years ago. It was a argument at users who think in order to breed it has to meet "Code" and health issues are not by makin the breed smaller. The smaller you go the more prone they are. Many think they should be 7 or under and if they are over then its not pure. Im sorry but that info is wrong. as you said, many are above 7 but dont tell me to get her fix bc she is not under 7 then say you do it for the love of the breed. |
I honestly don't think anyone who knows yorkies thinks that because one weighs over 10lbs they aren't pure. If you read here enough you will see we have lots who weigh over 10lbs. It is usually someone who does not know the breed who thinks otherwise. |
To answer your guestion, Yes at 9 lbs your female would be able to handle a pregnancy provided she is healthy. For breeding I would suggest getting an experienced male/stud that is smaller. Do your research and make an informed decision. Do your research on breeding, whelping and the cost for an emergency c-cection in your area. Plus you want to have a good vet and possibly a mentor who can and will guide you in the right direction when it comes to your lack of breading knowledge. Things can go wrong during a whelp even with a healthy female. There is no control over what might and can go wrong with the mother or even the pups. You need to consider that and so much more before you choose to become a breeder. Even if it is just one time, there are still risks involved ! |

"10 over not pure"? you will always have that gene. they can stay dormant for years but there being breed out and its sad. Thats how they work. Does not mean its not pure. Look at your pedigree for that. You can have over 10 and it be pure. research shows it use to be common to have yorkies over 10. Thanks dawn. |
I think you need to go back and carefully read my post. I was not saying they are not pure, just the opposite :). |

sigh........ this is why we have so many yorkies out there that don't even look like yorkies. You can't just put two "pure" yorkies together and get puppies there is so much more then just that and the weight. The breeding dogs have to have genetic testing, you need to know there lines and they need to be a perfect example of the breed. |
Lovetodream88 why can't you if there pure? Any good breeder is going to check the health and trends. Before making an educated decision. It makes me mad when people say you have to follow standards that's not the case is hurting the breed. |

If its truly pure then that should not be a issue. It will always look like a yorkie. The problem is everyone is trying to meet standerd n you have byb killing the lines for money |

Has nothing to do with hating the standerds and I don't hate them. I just don't like ppl thinking they have to breed by them. I can tell you why but that's another story. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck then it must be a duck. That's all I'm saying. Even if they where pure, what happen to the love of the breed? |
