I would even if I had all the money in the world, and could hire help in,one person to one dog I would never have so many that could not easily fit into our home.

Of course that is for the breeds I own. Sled dogs are a different kettle of fish, but hey if you are not breeding to the working owner who wants to train their dogs for the Iditorod; and want to place into a pet home; those dogs need lots of in home living.

I hate to see those poor sled dogs tied to their houses row after row and all for the "sport" of the person who runs them for hours. I'd run for hours too, if that was all the life I had but yes, no doubt, before anyone gets all up in arms, I'm sure they rotate and play with them, exercise them, vet them. I've seen and read enough to know some of what goes on with the sport but geez, not a good life for a dog at all generally to me. Some dogs are withdrawn and undersocialized and take to this kind of life and others are made that way, no doubt, by this type of life. But I'm like you, Gail, if I were rich I'd buy them all if I could and try to find them home with savvy owners who could give them a family life with lots of outside play and hard exercise but a rich life, full of all the little things and real involvement in something other than snow, cold, ice, an igloo house, chains, harnesses, food and running. Those dogs run their hearts out - run until their pads are raw, muscles torn, hearts............well, I'm sorry. Didn't mean to go off. Maybe it's tons of fun and the dogs would choose it over the life I would give one.

Wonderful people, however some of their biggest sponsor supporters are sled dog breeders: it makes me sad sled dogs are kept in uninsultated barns when not racing, but if they were kept indoors, they wouldn't survive the races-also they are selectively bred in a way that makes them resistant to colder temperatures.

I have a friend in AK from college she got a dog from them, it had to be 'conditioned'a to be an indoor dog.


Personally I don't get it I mean I know Alaskans especially are an outdoorsy breed of people but sledding is solely for sport now-except the one off moutain survivalist people.
