I have been doing a lot of research, going to different dog shows, talking to my veterinarian and different yorkie breeders for information on starting my foundation of a good female and male yorkie for showing and breeding, but some of the breeders that have nice quality dogs have limited registration on them. I am very interested and have devoted my time and finances, with the approval of my husband of course and still learning and becoming knowledgable about these precious little guys. I have been researching for about a year now and we are almost finished with their new room that the oldest child had before moving out on her own. I would love all the information that anyone can give me on choosing good quality, healthy :aimeeyork yorkie pups to welcome to our home. :animal-pa

Are you already involved in showing? If not I would start going. You have earn the right to own quality dogs on open registrations.

I know a few people who bought their dogs on limited registrations but did showing, obedience, agility, etc. with their dogs and their breeders changed it to full registrations.

Find a breeder who will mentor you.

You may want to post in the showing or breeders section. Get the experts instead of in the main discussion section.

You have to start from the beginning. Find a breeder willing to mentor you so you can learn as much as possible about the breed standard, showing, learn pedigrees lines etc. No one repuatble is going to sell you a male and a female for you to go at it. If you are approaching breeders to just buy a couple of puppies telling them you want to show, they will turn you down flat.
IF you are lucky, you may find a breeder willing to CO own one with you usually a male. You can start there and it will give you something to show. YOu also will not be getting a 3 months old if the breeder is reputable. A puppy can be potential at 3 or 4 months but a show dog is not easily determined until at least 7 or 8 months old and then it can still go 'off'.
For showing, you have to learn grooming the show Yorkie, handlng the show yorkie in the ring if you want to show it yourself.
Many many approach show breeders, say they want to show and want to buy a puppy for that purpose to eventually breed. What has happened most of the time is puppy is raised, bred over and over, puppies sold as 'champion lines' and the dog has never seen the show rings and buyer never shows up at a dog show again if they managed to gettheir hands on a puppy.
There is not much a show breeder hasn't experienced or heard before, what catches their attention more is what you do and what you are willing to agree to in their terms for a show dog.

Yup, Suncera already is banging out puppies with no experience no way of knowing how to whelp or look after a whelping bitch and will never get the trust of someone reputable now. Nice catch MikaTallulah, I was hoping this person Suncera was sincere, guess not.

why are you asking for this when you are already breeding. This is something you should have did before you ever started. No reputable breeder is going to take you seriously now

Reputable shower/breeders have spent YEARS learning and absorbing information and developing their program. When these people have spent an ENORMOUS amount of TIME and MONEY in developing their breeding program, and the pups they are breeding are winning in shows, you will be hard pressed to find one that is going to just provide you with "the keys to their success".....so many people LIE about their intentions and try to just step over all the work and research and learning and time and money and heartache, etc., etc., etc., that comes with being a breeder/ shower....they have not "paid their dues" so to speak......what reputable breeder will hand you the secret to their hard work or producing strong, healthy, show-worthy pups, just because you "talk the talk" ???.....you say you have invested a year into research and study and pedigrees.....congratulations! You are just about 5-9 years away from having a REAL understanding of pedigrees and genes and genetics and the successful combinations of these lines, and types, and......it just goes on and on.....and apparently, you have already started breeding ? so what are you looking for? SURELY, YOU ALREADY HAVE "GOOD QUALITY, HEALTHY YORKIES" or you would not have started breeding. You need to get involved in showing....UKC shows are the place to start. You need to meet people that can give you basics, and you need to be growing and becoming more involved in shows....move on to AKC sponsored shows.....breeders will get to know YOU and if they like what they see....and BELIEVE me they know EXACTLY what they are seeing when they look at you.....you will find one that will be willing to mentor you....and it goes from there. It isnt easy, it isnt quick, and it is a ton of work and expense and SACRIFICE on your part.....when you gain the trust and RESPECT of the people you are trying to become one of, then you will find someone that is willing to work with you and MAYBE help you with a breeding pair of quality dogs.

If a breeder sells a dog ONLY with the option of LIMITED registration it is because they are not of show and thus breeding quality. Everything you are asking about here a reputable mentor will assist you with...didn't you ask about anyone being a mentor for you at any of the shows you went to? It might take time but find a good mentor who shows and breeds and you'll be much better off.

Suncera even though you posted 6 yrs ago, that post stays forever. I don't know or need to know what happened to the two litters you were expecting then.

But you do need to be honest, with folks here, which is a good start to be honest with potential show folks, who just might entrust you with a boy/girl of their lines.

It has always worked for me. I am very well known in my small pond, and I have over 10 yrs earned the right to breed. And btw not Yorkies; although I was entrusted with a show Yorkie a couple of years ago.

Why how did I get there you might ask. Well by attending shows, by training my dogs in obedience and rally. By being entrusted with my first show quality pup, and bringing him to a GCh

What happen to the puppies your dog pretty much just had?

I have a female that just delivered 5 puppies but, i'm learning that she is not in the weight category to show. No I don't consider myself as a breeder because I am still learning the breed. I would rather make sure I know what i am getting myself into before taking on that title. I breed her to a friend that i got to know quite well. So yes i'm still learning the do's and don'ts. And the care that these little guys need.

Because I want to be more knowledgeable and get other opinions and suggestions, this is her first litter and I want to make sure that I do everything correctly as possible. I have my vet that is handy and a couple of mentors on hand. My female yorkie is not of show standards which she would not qualify to show. She is CKC registered only. Which I'm also finding out a lot about the registry as well.

Well anyone who breeds there dog is considered a breeder how good a breeder is up to you. Its not just about the weight off the dog there are many many things that make a dog show quality and breeding worthy.

There is a lot of research that should be done before just putting two dogs together and making a litter.

Wow, I am sorry that I came at anyone the wrong way, Maybe I didn't explain myself clearly. I in no way thought I would get this kind of feed back but understand quite well from stories from the breeders that I have talk to have told. It kind of makes it hard for new comers that are interested in showing and breeding. I know I have a lot more to learn. I do have a female yorkie that has had a healthy litter of pups on 04/29/12 and yes it was such a joy to be right there for her and with her when she delivered. I also have a AKC male that only weighs 2.5 Lbs that is cute as a button, but before I find a mate for him would rather have more knowledge of the AKC regulations. I want what is best for my babies and just want others to share my joy. I apologize in advance if I gave wrong impressions. I will stick with my veterinarian, friend, and mentors that are willing to guide me thru, which I see there will be a lot of learning to do.

I agree with you and I am still learning as I go. Some of the mentors that I have spoken with say that they had some trial and errors before being a success.

and thats what I am striving to be, is a good breeder.

She gave birth to 5 beautiful puppies, 3 girls and 2 boys. I am learning still about whelping, nesting and such, so I made sure that I had a kit together just in case for emergency procedures and my vet on stand by. She slept by my bed for the last two weeks with me having sleepless nights to make sure she didn't deliver without me.

So if you are wanting to be a good breeder, do you find anything amiss with the statement you have as your title for this thread? You said Starting with a healthy good quality foundation for breeding! Is that still what you are looking for.
