| uh oh... mastitis Help please I just got home from work (12 am) now and noticed that one of my molly's front teats are extremely swollen and firm. No major redness noted but it looks extremely painful and spreads as far as the teat below it up to her armpit. I took a warm wet facecloth and massaged it a bit and will be calling the vet first thing tomorrow. Is there anything else you would recommend doing in the mean time? I should add, her babies are just over four weeks old and yes we have started weaning over the past few days. Last edited by jvdb; 05-17-2011 at 09:14 PM. |

| I just called the emergency hospital in our city for some advice. They said if she has no temperature and is acting normal, eating, etc that I can wait until the morning. I will be up bright and early to bring my little girl in! Any advice in the mean time would be wonderful. |

I don't know the answer (for a dog) but it seems like the warm washcloth would be soothing -- I know that's what they recommend for a woman with mastitis so it seems it would be beneficial. But definitely have the vet see her. Let us know what the final dx is.

| This happened to Ellie when I bred her a long time ago. I got some cold cabbage leaves and placed on the teat. Then I took an old sock and made a compression out of it by cutting off both ends. This held the cabbage leaves in place. It is like a woman would do if she was engorged. Hope this helps, because it really helped Ellie.
