| Holy Mother! You might remember me about Nina's litter... Well Today is about "Melina's" litter... Two weeks ago my sister and I found two lost dogs roaming around the street in a very bad shape. One of which is a male mini toy poodle and the other looks like a yorkie/poodle female mix. Since I already had 6 yorkies (with the puppies included) my sister decided to take them home with her maltese and be their foster momma. And it was when we took them to the grooming that we discovered the "excess" weight on the yorkie-poo was a BIG pregnant belly!!! My sister had already planned a trip before this so she let her dogs stay with me and Melina is giving birth as I type! But Holy Christ! There are already 4 puppies out which might weight around 2 oz (Darn, I didn't bring the scale home!) and her belly is still HUGE! I'm guessing this poor girl will have around 10 puppies and will be a long night! Please wish us luck so there are no losses. The pups are like 1/3 of what Nina's puppies were when she delivered. And Nina is driving me nuts because she keeps barking like crazy and crying because she wants me to kick out Melina (I put her in my bathroom to keep a close eye on her). Nina is such a spoiled adamant lady and now I can't make her be quiet. My other yorkies are just fine but a bit nervous about Nina's never ending whining! |

| I agree -- stay with momma & pups! You don't know when your help will be needed, but if it is, timing is CRITICAL! You can easily lose a pup in the time it takes to come post on YT! My Sadie had both of her litters in my bed. She had a nice bed ready with her little whelping box at one end with a heating pad at the ready. But she knew she needed me so she had them in my bed. If you had gotten the xrays done, you would know for sure how many puppies she is having. Makes it much easier to know when she is done. Hope you have done your homework and understand what to look for and to make sure she has passed all of the placenta. Since she did not get the pre-whelping exams....I would take her & pups to the vet in the morning for a quick once over. I have promised that if I ever breed again, I will have the momma at the vet next day regardless. I lost a momma dog on the 3rd day after whelping and I cannot understate the importance of what you do AFTER she has the pups. If you need advice/help -- just ask. Mary and others here have years of experience doing this! Their information is invaluable! Whatever you do over the next few days -- err on the side of caution! Good luck and I pray all goes well with mom & pups!

| Well, she stopped delivering after the sixth puppy. I took her to the vet in the morning because she still had a big belly and they did x-rays and there were no more babies but she is overweight, was swollen and had a minor infection; to which they gave us treatment. The vet was guessing Melina is around 10 years old and was impressed she had such a big litter at her age. So we will have her spayed after weaning the pups. All puppies are doing well! They are 5 males and 1 female. They gained weight, they look bigger now after drinking momma's milk. Boys weighted 5 oz each and the only girl 3 oz. She is so tiny and has a sweet gold color! Wish I could keep her but it is impossible so I only pray we can find them all very loving homes. I will upload a pic later. My sister is back from her trip and she will take them back home since my Nina is being so impolite to Melina. She comes to bark at the room's door and tries to get in when I come inside or out for feeding all other pets. Thank you all for the support! Last edited by Infinity; 03-22-2011 at 05:16 PM. |

| did the vet recommed such an ederly dog to actually feed the pups herself? seems to me that's a bit old to be trying to nurse pups. wishing you luck and hoping the pups do okay and so does momma |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I have read others threads like this (pregnant dogs just running free) It is such a great thing that you and your sister have taken them in. Good to hear the whelp went well and that all is well. I cant beleive that at her age she did so well, and thankful she did.
