I noticed the time after posting earlier. Since there wasn't much of a description of Sadie's condition, I'm hoping that maybe it wasn't labor but was mistaken for it. Going by Donna's previous threads about Sadie, she is only on day 57 or 58, so those babies could stand to hold off for a few more days.

She is holding a low temp, though, so maybe it is time for her. Fingers crossed for a safe whelp.

I think maybe woogie is right. Nothing at all has happened since the last post. She has ate a little but all she wants to do now is sleep. She is not in any pain or distress. She is acting like her normal self again except that her temp is still 98.3. I am sorry to get everyone's hopes up but I did not know that a fur baby could have false labor, if that is what it was. It sure did seem like the real thing. Her belly was getting hard and she was very restless during that time. When she is awake she keeps staring at me, is this normal? Thank you all for the prayers and please keep them coming.

Does your mentor friend think she's not going any further tonight? Were there any hard contractions at all? No discharge or any indication of a pup in the birth canal? Is she able to stand? No weakness? Every whelp is unique so there are some things there's just no telling about.

With my girls, it's the dilated eyes that are a dead give away for signaling labor. I've had them pant and seem very uncomfortable with no labor following but the eyes always tell me. Of course, once their behavior goes off the norm, I'm watching like a hawk until delivery. If you both think she's done for now, at least keep a constant eye on her as things could change quickly. If you see Sadie bracing her feet and pushing or see her tail make like a pump handle, that's definitely labor!

Best of luck with Sadie and keep us updated.

Good Morning, after no sleep again last night, not because of Sadie but because of my own worries, we are still the same. My mentor says she is not progressing and that she thinks it is false labor at this point. She did have some hard contractions but still nothing. No puppy in the birth canal and Sadie can stand and she is not weak just tired. I just took her out to potty and she was trying to run after a bird, I say trying cause at this point all she can do is waddle. I checked her eyes to see if they were dilated and they are not. I am wondering how active the pups are before a whelp. Sadies pups are moving so much you can see them at all times and it is non stop. I am sorry to get everyones hopes up but I am brand new at this and I really thought it was time by the way she was acting and after everything I have been reading. I will keep everyone updated and I am sure I will not sleep much now until the pups are here.

To ease your mind, I would get her into the vet and have him check her. An x-ray maybe in order.....

According to your previous posts your girl is on day 57 or 58 so a couple of more days in the oven is only for the better.

One question when you stand her is her spine dominately visible....the upper half of her sides a bit more slab sided. It could very well be that the espisode yesterday were the pups dropping and getting ready.

She just had an ultrasound and an x-ray a few days ago and they said everything is fine, pups are all lined up, whatever that means lol. Yes her spine is visible but her sides are not the way you described. What about the movement of the puppies, do they stop moving when the Mother is in labor? Her pups have been more active than ever.

When a mother is in labor what you will see is the pup traveling down the horn.

Ultrasound and x-ray a few days ago is a few days ago.....after what transpired yesterday I would want a more current snap shot.

Didn't you ask your mentor these questions?

Oh, I hope you can get some sleep, but sometimes they can keep us guessing. I had a girl once that kept me up for 3 days before having her babies. She was acting like she was in early labor but it never progressed. My wife and I slept in shifts so someone could keep an eye on her. Hopefully you have someone there with you. You know you won't get any real sleep until the babies are here and are well settled in.

With my girls, I notice that they get 'lumpy' just before giving birth. They go from just being big to looking like they're carrying a sack of potatoes. Just another indicator that the pups are getting into position. It can 'seem' like labor during that process and I hope that's the case with Sadie.

Did her temp go back up? No discharges? Do watch for a green discharge with no pup being born. The green discharge is a sign of the placenta separating and the babies must come at that time. Is your mentor friend still available for you? If you notice anything happening be sure to have her there with you. Is your vet available to you since it's going into the weekend?

Not sure if I posted this for you before, but here's a site that has loads of good info on the entire whelping process and what to watch out for. Dog Breeding and Canine Reproduction by Debbie Jensen. Dog Breeding and Whelping guide for dog breeders.

Best of luck with Sadie. Don't hesitate to get her to the vet if you have any concerns for her. While breeders here don't mind offering advice, it's no substitute for having someone qualified actually there.

I agree with this, Mary. Sadie has has a rough pregnancy (being picky throughout, some vomiting late term) and with yesterday's episode, a vet's assessment is in order, especially with an inexperienced breeder.

I know from my own experience, that when I have a girl that was off during her Season....and wasn't the happiest during her gestation period....I'm in for trouble.....a rough whelp......So, I may have her into the repro vets' a a couple of times......usually on day 55 and again at day 58 of the second breeding if she hasn't whelped.

Geez! I just read that your Sadie was 8 months of age at the time you joined YT in October 2010.....

No wonder she's having difficulty, not only is her body too young to be going through this but, she's not mentally mature.

I definately would be at the vets'

Took Sadie back to the vet she did an ultrasound and says the pups are moving into position which can also seem like labor, I beleive woogie mentioned that. Did blood work to make sure all is ok. Vet says everything looks real good and she can start real labor anytime. My mentor is availible to me at all times and so is the vet. Thank you all and I will keep you updated.
