10 and 1/2 Weeks and still nursing This may be an odd question, but I have a litter of 7 morkies that are 10 and 1/2 weeks old and the mom still wants to nurse them once or twice a day. Is this normal? Her first litter she weaned at 6 weeks. This time is different. I want to get them their first shots tomorrow, but someone told me I should not do that if they are still nursing. I want them to have their shots, and yet I don't have the heart to stop the nursing if mom wants to do it. Help, I don't know what to do.

| I have never heard of not getting shots untill done nursing. My kittens got shots and they were still nursing. She shouldnt be nursing them anyway though they are way too old. My kittens that I kept with the mom stopped nursing completely at 4 mos. They arent getting any milk anyway just going through the motions of nursing

You can get their shots while they are still nursing, my Sassy let her last litter nurse until about 12 weeks.

You might check with your vet but most breeders give the puppy shots while puppies are still nursing. It's perfectly safe to give the puppies their shots while still nursing. My vet recommends at least 2 shots 2-3 weeks apart. They must wait to go to their new homes for 1 week after the second shot so it has a chance to be working when they go. It's also ok for them to nurse as long as they want to and the mom will let them. Milk quality really decreases at 6-8 weeks and the milk becomes thinner and less filling. This helps encourage the puppies to eat solid food. Your puppies are nursing for comfort and are getting only a little nutrition from nursing. As long as mom lets them why stress everyone out by making them stop? I hope they aren't going to their new homes until after 12 weeks old anyway so just encourage them to eat plenty of solid foods. I leave out dry puppy food 24/7 and give dry puppy mixed with canned food 3 times a day at this age. Teresa

Thank You Thanks to all of your for your responses. I did take them for their shots today and they seem to be doing fine. They will not go to their new homes until they are at least 12 weeks old. A couple are big enough but not mature enough. Besides that, I just can't part with them. This is the part that I don't like. I want to keep each and every one. They are soooo cute!!! Thanks again for all your help. I do feel better. gwhite5000
