| ![]() And if any of the pups are purplish looking in their mouths or tummies, pick them up and massage them a bit, imitate their Mom licking them with your fingers and a washcloth....

| ![]() You have to make sure that all are nursing, especially to get the colostrum (first milk)... From: Colostrum and Passive Immunity in Dogs Passive immunity through colostrum: Dogs and cats, like many other mammals, pass the majority of the maternal antibodies to the newborn via colostrum. Defined as the first 24 hours of milk flow following birth, colostrum is a highly concentrated mixture of large protein antibody molecules, water, vitamins, electrolytes, and nutrients. You want to be sure they all get that....

| ![]() You cant quess if they are nursing youve got to know they are all nursing. They are fragile and can go down quick after just missing one feeding.

![]() You must be in awe, thrilled, but also petrified! This is a lot to throw on a person who was just told last week that the pregnancy was false. Think a new vet is in order! Thankfuly, sounds like you have a good little momma on your hands. Definately offer her water/gatorade or milk often. She may be reluctant to leave the puppies to drink as much as she really needs to. I know I had to offer mine drinks and food. She would not leave them the first week at all. I even had to physically pick her up to take her out to pee. Glad yours is doing that on her own. Your pups are good weights for a large litter -- no problem there. Just keep weighing each day and you should see continued gain. Might want to put some sort of a color code on them so you can record the weight of each. I have seen little velcro collars, yarn tied around their little necks (and changed every few days so they do not become tight), nail polish on their toe nails......anything to know which is which....Just be sure if you do put anything around their necks that it will not pose a choking hazard. You may want to come up with some sort of nursery system for them. A whelping box is all you need right now, but they will learn how to get out that by the second week. So, you will need a pack-n-play, or a play yard that you can set up a puppy bed in one area, puppy pads all over the bottom, food & water in another area. Of course you won't need food until they are 4 weeks old. Water -- I would strongly suggest a water bottle. That way it stays clean and they won't play in it and make a mess. Again -- don't need this until like 3-4 weeks old. I always offered mom food & water away from the pups so they did not get into it too soon. The following two links both make great puppy places after the whelping box is breached. ![]() North State Superyard XT Portable Playard and Gate - Walmart.com This is the one I have -- I made it into a rectangle, put their bed at one end, puppy pads over all the bottom, food & water at the other end, toys in the middle. Made a perfect place for them to live from 2 weeks old to 12/16 weeks. Walmart.com: IRIS 4 Panel Indoor/Outdoor Plastic Pen White: Dogs -- This is the one I would buy now if I was needing it. A little nicer with the little doggy door. and only $42 For the first 2 weeks I kept the whelping box in a pack N play like this: Walmart.com: Mia Moda Playgio Playard in Blue: Gear I actually cut a hole in one end, several inches up from the bottom. That way tiny puppies could not make it up to the hole but momma could. Then I put her stool outside the hole so she could make her escape when needed. This works well, as long as you only use it for the first 2 weeks. After that they will try to climb and their little claws get stuck in the mesh. They will also try to get out the hole I cut. So that is when they get moved to the play yard. You may come up with your own system. I just offer these as ideas to start your own imagination. ![]() I am a little jealous at all the fun you are about to have. There is nothing like having a litter of puppies to tend to. They are so much fun, changing and learning every day! It is the next best thing to having your own babies!

as always Perfectly put advise!! i usually use a baby play pen for mine until they are about 4 weeks (with sower curtins covering the mess so claws dont get stuck- and momma has steps to get in and out! right now my 3 are in a hexegonal cheeko puppy pen- its brilliant and folds flat into a bag when not in use! it was £50... gotta disagree with the last bit tho- baby dogs are way better than baby people- the involuntery pooing stops sooner and they are soo darn fluffy! ![]()
