Need help?? Hi everybody...I'm am new and need some help. I own 3 yorkies, my one female who is four and weighs 7 lbs had a litter of 6 pupies two days ago. She has had 2 previous litters of 4 each and last time she had the calcium issue but was able to continue nursing. Her first pup this litter is really tiny, Abbey (the mom) keeps trying to move her out of the whelping box to another kennel that I have in my bedroom. She has NEVER picked any of her other pups in her mouth, she is so antsy, she is in and out of the whelping box. What is going on with her?? Thanks, Julie

Perhaps she is trying to a) either protect this tiney or b) trying to reject her. In either case I'm sure you know how to care for a tiney that mayhap not be getting the nourishment and support it needs.

She might not be comfy about where the pups are currently at and trying to move them. Maybe you could try moving the whelping box and see how she does.

Have you tried to put the tiny puppy to nurse by himself on the biggest nipple? He may the younger puppy, the last egg to be fertilized , you may need to supplement him. Make sure you keep him going, hand feed if you need to , with a seringe, you can "milk the mom" into a medicine cup or use a supplement , such as puppy formula, many here use the goats milk , which i am not familiar with . To avoid the calcium drop make sure to supplement mommy now, a quarter of a "tums" tablet a day and one small spoon of fat free cottage cheese 2 times a day will do for now. You need to care for the tiny puppy and make sure he is warm until she passes this state of immediate post labor and things calm down . Is he latching to nurse? XOXO

Thanks everybody!! you've given me some good suggestions. I didn't have my other female when she had her last two litters and they don't get along. I have the other female in another room and she can't get to her but because Abbey can still see her I think maybe she feels really exposed. I'm going to try to move the whelping box today and she if that makes a difference. I do have her on calcium this time, I will check out the little one a little more careful and make sure she is getting enough but I think she is.

| You need to move her to a quite area away from everything else, maybe a room where you can close the door, she will be more comfortable. And like the others said the little boy you may need to let him nurse first, take the others off and let him nurse first for 5 to 6 minutes by himself.

If she had a problem nursing 4, she very likely will have another problen with 6..I would be supplimenting all and then let them nurse...it will cut down on the amount of milk she has to make...or you can nurse the biigest ones before the nurse on mom...they will still nurse from her to get antibodies...keep her in a quiet place where she can not see other bitches..she may sense there is a problem with the tiniest...some mom's do that..good luck
