I'm not talking about like or dislike for YTCA. It has a very tiny membership where I live. I think all of New England has maybe 6 or so active members. It took me years to figure out how to connect with any at all because for many of those years I lacked the desire and ability to travel to shows very often. I can do better now but it would have been nice in those intermediate years to have a way to connect with like minded breeders.

"WHO" is determining what a "hobby" breeder is? Meaning is this just someones take on it or is it written somewhere? Just curious if this was just someones opinion or if there really is a real definition. If so I was interested in the link.

Topknot posted the link and there is several throughout the web and written. All one has to do is google or go to a book store.

But, as in all hobbies, a person completely immerses one self in it to do it well.

I wanted to know if there was a true definition, as in someone of importance would define, like the AKC.

Here we go again.

We all know an excellent handler can champion any dog for a "hobby breeder", it does not mean the dog meets the standard and is a healthy dog! If one has the extra money they could champion every dog they own. If you know the right judge, right handler, etc! So just because one shows their dogs or hires a handler does not mean they are breeding to the standard or producing healthy litters. As much as I hate to state this again "just because a person is a member of the ytca does not make them reputable or mean they are breeding to better the breed".

Per the AKC site: American Kennel Club - AKC Board Policy Manual

Hobby Breeder Definition (April 1993 Board meeting).
Any individual who produced 50 puppies a year could not be considered a hobby breeder.

I have had such a great time going to all the shows I have attended. I have only ran into one bad apple. I am the type of person who asks a lot of questions. She was not very nice to me.

But, I will tell you one thing. I will not stop just because one person was a B****. It's called passion.

I have seen hobby breeder defined as the same as a byb or someone who breeds for the betterment of the breed so I think it all depends on whose defing it
