I never had any problems . my protocol is i help get the puppy cleaned up, always have a bunch of clean ( bright white bleached dry ) face towels at hand, as soon as the umbilical cord is cut i dry the pup with a towel, nice and clean, aspirate if needed , shaken like "the pendulum" if needed... i usually use one or 2 towels per puppy , and put it back to mom to start nursing. Never had a mom stressed about it , i always keep close of her , i usually sitting right there on the floor beside mom and i have everything i use at hand

yes it's necessary to handle the pup right away cause you have to see if it's breathing on it's own and to put them on the tit to get them drinking right away..but mine being a new mother was overly protected she's fine with me now after about 2 wks she was fine with me handling them

I'm having a problem wording this next question in my mind, but here goes: When the puppy comes out, you clear the mouth and nasal passages with the bulb syringe, and do you need to do any kind of patting or slight shaking to the pup? Someone was telling me their maltese breeder used to do this with her newborn puppies and I was wondering if anyone else does this.

do you have some puppies due jessica and what kind...i didn't use a nasal passage i wiped there face offf with a paper towel and put them up to my ear and heard them breathing ok with no gurgling in their breathing i had a yorkie breeder on the phone talking me threw it and i did not shake it or anything..the mother did all the work i just made sure it was breathing on it's own and when there were all out tried to get them on her tit but chloe wasn't producing milk so i took her to the vet and i'm glad i did she had 1 stuck inside her that didn't show on the x-ray she pushed it out after he gave her the needle to help with the milk and it gave her the contractions to pushed but sadly he was already gone..this is a good place to meet ppl and listen to them that's where i met my new friend ann and mary from here and i've talk to ann on the phone and she was the 1 talking me threw it..gl

Yes, my 7 lb (well now more like 8 or 8.5 lb) girl Layla is due around August 7th. My mentor just sent me a comprehensive six page list of whelping supplies, and I have her phone number on hand in case I need it. We are going to get X-Rays tomorrow to see how many puppies there are and if they are normal sized. They should be because the father is 5lbs and all his family are teeny tiny. Today is day 48, so they will be here soon! I have attached some pics of Layla, before the pregnancy and two pics from just a few days ago.

If you've cleaned, suctioned, warmed it, weighed it, the pup should be put with mom and encourged to suckle and left with her until she begins contractions again. Then remove the pup and place in a warm clean cozy area under a heat lam, that is about 12 - 24 inches above the area. Over handling can contribute to hyperglycemia, dehydration and does stress out the mom....you don't want that......it can cause her to hold back her labor.

remember the x-ray may not show all the pups when i had it done they told me 3 pups but there was another 1 inside her dead..yes it's always good to use a stud smaller then the mother for smaller pups..layla looks so much like my chloe gl can't wait to see the pics how do you attach the pic under your quote i haven't figure that out yet..

Using a smaller stud is a misnomer. The mother controls the size of the pups while in utero. While in utero size is contingent on the nutrients the mother receives. Once the pups are whelped size is contingent on pedigree; the dogs that are behind the sire and the dam.

Does this mean a female toy breed could successfully breed with a much larger dog without having a c-section? That doesn't make sense to me and I think I may be confused

Again, the female controls the size of the pups while in utero; how big the pups will get while she's carrying them is based on many factors; her nutrition and her health playing the bigger part, how many pups are in one horn is another. The possibility of c-sections; are size of the female & reproductive area; her ability to dilate to pass the pups, the elasticity of the uterine walls and and her stamina. She can completely tire out during the process and be unable to whelp a pup; even though she may have whelped 1, 2 or 3 already. Yorkies are a breed onto themselves, you can not breed pheno type to pheno type and know what you are going to get, as say poodles.

Genetics play the biggest part on what a pup will be at adult hood. Just as in humans. So, before breeding one should study both sides of the pedigree; especially the first 3 generations. That is why it is best to line breed. You have a better control over your lines that way.

Regarding the umbilical cord, I know you all seem to do it differently. Should I clamp it, then cut it and tie the end? I am going to talk to my mentor about it, just wanted more opinions. I have most of my whelping supplies, I still plan to get some nylon hemostats and plain dental floss. And maybe som different colored thread to tie somewhere to help me remember which is which.

I've never used nylon hemostats, since I obtained mine from a surgical supply company.

You can use your hemostat to clamp about an inch from the puppy's belly and a second hemostat one more inch down on the cord towards the vulva to keep the cord from going back in. Use dull scissors or your fingernails to cut the cord between the two hemostats. It's great if you have a 2nd pair of hands to help hold the hemostat.....

Be careful to keep the hemostat pressed against the pup's belly so you do not pull it away from the belly and cause a hernia or pull out the intestines. (in the event the intestines are accidentally pulled out by you or the dam, do put a sterile, cold, wet compress over the intestines and get the pup to a veterinarian RIGHT AWAY!)

Keep the pup's head down while you are working on the pup. If you see any bleeding at the pup's naval cord, you may apply a silver nitrate stick to stop the bleeding. After the pup is crying and breathing, towel dry, and quickly tie the cord between the belly and the hemostat (approx 3/4" from the belly).

We now use the nylon hemostats as does my vet (which is how we found out about them)...They are so light weight that you can clamp and leave them on for a while without the tugging from the weight of stainless...

Since I obtained my surgical equipment from a friend that works for a surgical suppy company a while ago; they are stainless steel. I'll have to ask her about the nylon. May I ask on the sterilization process. Can they be sterilized via autoclave?
