I know you are very anxious, the waiting is the hardest part, but I am sensing your nervousness, and I am not nearly as tuned into you as your little girl is. It is very important to her right now that she doesn't sense your nervousness, so keep a close eye on her but make sure she gets to relax and you do to.

You're right. I was so prepared at the beginning, not nervous but excited. Now as the days count I am getting more and more anxious. I'm sure shes fine but of course a mummy always worries:). I'll try to do my best to let her relax

Just figured I'd update you. No puppies yet. Last night her temp dropped to 97.8 and she was a little shivery but nothing more than the usual digging. This morning it is back to 99.8 and she is acting normal again.

That drop to 97.8 is a bit scary. It could very well have been a thermometer mis function. But, it would be something I wouldn't take a chance with and would take her in to the vet's for a check-up.

Hmm I should have taken it again. I wasn't concerned since Debbie Jensen's site says "some dogs go lower 98" and after the EXTENSIVE post reading I have done on here it seems like temps in the high 97's are not unheard of.

Also, I am using a digital human thermometer, not a rectal thermometer. Would this in any way affect the reading? (I have read that some are instructed to ad a certain number of .1's to the reading).

Not that I am at all challenging your response... it makes me worry a little again. If it had been just the temp drop on its own I might have not been as concerned but because there is the question that they are overdue I am a little more worried. After talking to vets and researching a little more it seemed that the general consensus was that in 99% of cases the issue with "overdue pregnancies" is simply a date miscalculation but I'm starting to wonder. Today is day 67 from the FIRST breeding and day 59 from the LAST breeding (although I think its safe to say she got pregnant somewhere earlier in the 9 day span than later) If it doesn't happen TONIGHT I'm bringing my baby in.

Interesting! According to Mayo Clinic for human babies you can use an oral thermometer rectally but you have to add an entire DEGREE on to them. Maybe my temperature readings have been off all along? do you think last night was the first time it actually dropped to 98?

I almost wonder since her temp averaged in the 99's for so long? What do most people do to take temps?

I guess I'm a bit overly cautious, as the one time and let me stress the only time that one of my females whelped puppies on day 64 from her last breeding her temp dropped below 98. She went down on me. Although, she free whelped the puppies, she had a ripped horn and went systemic on me (shock).

I usually breed on the 12th and 14th day of showing color. And based on the knowledge that a female's eggs break down within 48 hours and the male sperm live up to seven days. A female could concieve any time from the day of the first breeding to a few days after the last breeding, however, anytime from fifty-six days to seventy-days okay provided none of the danger signals are apparent. And of course there have been incidents where a girl never begins labor. But, those instances are rare.

Don't worry your caution is appreciated. It helps me gauge how worried I should be. I think she stood for him as early as 10 days after showing color, I hope and pray all this fuss is only because she was not ready and did not conceive until 2-4 days later (which would be accurate to the time that you normally breed your girls). We wait and see. I'll keep you updated but tomorrow is my limit for waiting this out:)

I'm not one to take temps, (use a digital), as I've found that I become obsessive with the temperature fluxuations. I read everything to the temp. So, I only use a thermometer to establish their normal temp range or if I see any changes to the normal activities.

Just to add, I run to the vet for everything that I don't feel comfortable with. The more I breed, the more cautious I become. And it's just because I've learned that every whelp is different and things happen that are out of the ordinary.

Just a guess and it might have been said, but I dont think she took at all on the first breeding, and took that 9th day.:confused:

If that being the case is she on schedule?:)

FOR HEAVENS SAKE, now those puppies wont just be running they will be sitting, beggin and barking.:eyetearss

I have been mislead by a malfunctioning digital thermometer. It gave temps that were near what they should be. But they were days off. I always keep a spare on hand just for that reason.

My little girl had a temperature that dropped below 98 twice last week (and not on the day she delivered either). I had her looked at by the vet one of those times and nothing was amiss. I think it was thermometer variation as my thermometer registers the temperature in 30 seconds ( or less sometimes). Now this might be too much information, but once the thermometer was quite poopy when I removed it and my vet told me that if the rectum is not clear of poop, that you might actually be taking the temperature of the poop which would obviously be a little cooler than the dog.

Haha thanks, and yes taking the temperature of poop is not going to get us anywhere:) lol.

I've definitely slowed down on the temps, you guys are right, you start to get a little nutty if you take them too often, they make you want to read into anything.

I've noticed her want to be in her box a little more today and her tummy has really grown over the past few days. I tried to close the door to give her some quiet but she just got mad at me and barked/howled until I opened it lol
