| Thinking of safety. You may choose a marker to mark the stomach or canine nail polish to mark the coat. |

| I use different colored permanent markers on the belly as a new born and then in an ear as the pups get a bit older. I generally give each pup a corresponding color name. |

| could you swipe a surgical marker from your vet? You could use it to mark tummies or ears to tell them apart. |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | I have heard food color in the ear works. I have never had a big enough litter to have to do it.LOL I usually can tell them apart with the markings.

| We used canine nail polish and it worked fabulously! We painted Puppy #1 front left paw, puppy #2 front right paw puppy, # 3 back left paw, puppy # 4 back right paw, and puppy # 5 had no polish at all. Thank goodness we didnt have 6 puppies hahahaha (then just use a different color)!

| You may not prefer to use red polish. It looks like blood. It's unsettling if you're half asleep. |

| Red polish looks like blood. You know it's polish but you forget when you're half asleep. |

| WELL I had 3 boys and 1 girl...so stella was easy..lol. And the big boy was easy too. He was double the size of the rest til he left but the other two boys I could tell apart by the time they were 3-4 weeks old. One had a completely black looking face and one looked brown...Depends on your litter. But I know with the two boys i either used yarn or shaved the tip of ones ear. Or you could shave a paw???

No we did not use different colors for different sex puppies. The first puppy born was automatically #1 and we charted all the info immediately such as time of birth, birth weight, sex of puppy and which toenail we painted and so on for the next puppy born. There were 2 of us during the whelp which made it easier. We never had any confusion and all the information was charted perfectly!

| These are all great ideas, I really like the surgical marker, do you think mom will lick it off? Also, nail polish is great do I have to use K9 polish or can I use mine? |

K9 is thin, dries in no time. You don't want puppies using regular, thinking safety. Too toxic. Due to the size of liters, this breed doesn't require much. I don't know how big dog breeders do it. | |
