First Litter Hey peeps, haven't been on here in quite a while. Anyway, my 1.5 yr old female yorkie is in her second heat, 7th day. We brought her to a breeder 2 days ago who also does stud services. Apparently Miley (my yorkie) was after the stud dog, Max(under 4 pounds), as much as he was after her! Within an hour, they were in a tie. The breeder, who has been one for 20 years, says that more matings=more puppies. Because of that she said she's almost afraid to do a second mating. However, I'm afraid that she won't get pregnant. Just a note, Max has tried to impregnate 95 bitches, and succeeded with every one. Miley is due around May 2nd (59 days) and May 6th (63 days). This is my first time breeding, and I have done much research, and continue to. Any help, advice, and personal experiences welcome!!!!:D |
How many pups there will be depends on how many eggs the female passed during ovulation that were greeted by viable sperm. The sperm may remain viable for a couple of days following a tie. I've had a girl have 5 pups with only 1 tie. I highly doubt any more ties would have resulted in more pups, though I usually allow 2 ties, with 1 day in between. Best of luck with your prospective litter. |
Ok, thanks for helping me understand;). I'm rreeaallyy excited and hopeful for puppies. We've been SUPER busy lately, so I'm hoping to see if they can mate once more tomorrow. |
Also, erm... this sounds kinda stupid but is there any way to do Artificial Insemenation without a male dog? Like, at all ever? I'm guessing no, but just wondering. |

Ok, I was just randomly curious lol. yeah, I guess I'm just worried Miley wont get pregnant |

Miley's just 4 pounds, and the breeder said she probably wouldnt let us mate her with Max if she didn't have such thick hips (apparently she has thick hips). |

At 4 pounds, Miley is considered too small for breeding. Most breeders use 5 pounds as a minimum safe breeding weight, but even then, it depends on structure. What you're looking for is enough clearance in the pelvic area for a pup's head to pass through. There should be some wiggle room for your thumb when placed between the pelvic bones. Actually, you have to consider that many pups are born breach so then you have the rear end coming first. Aside from the stresses on a small girl carrying a litter, there is a higher risk of a c-section being necessary. Or, she could quit pushing before she's done and it's off to the vet's you go, assuming you recognize her distress. You'll also need to be prepared to hand feed babies if necessary, and the chances of that is higher if she has very small babies. Even when healthy, those born in the 2 ounce range often are too small to latch on and nurse. There's much more to be considered, but the point I'm trying to make is that breeding Yorkies can be challenging, even in a textbook case. Miley's pregnancy wouldn't be considered textbook, but instead risky, based on her size. That's a lot to contend with for a first time breeder and a lot of risk to expose your Miley to. Having her spayed now would be the safest thing for Miley. I have a little girl that is about Miley's size. I had her spayed once it was obvious she would never make breeding size and she's now my House Princess. I could not, in good conscience, do anything else. |
Thanks for reminding me of all the risks, I know but I still want to go through with this |
The stud owner bred her on her 5th day of heat...could you be off on the day number??? Far too early..and few bitches stand and accept a male on the 5th day...possible, but not often...and one breeding at day 5 is not the best for a litter. JMO..any breeder who thinks the more you breed a bitch, the more pups you get is completely uneducated and has no business breeding...I am sorry to be so blunt, but the stupidity of some breeders is scary...and dangerous. You do not have to OWN a male to do AI..you can buy semen..same as stud service..it can be shipped all over the world.. |

Your decision is one that no experienced breeder here would make and they are all much more qualified than any first time breeder. Your decision speaks volumes. Breedings such as this have as much chance of being disastrous as they do of going relatively well. If you continue with this, I hope you get lucky for Miley's sake. BTW, it's not you going through this. It's Miley and the risks are hers. |
I recommend you have an xray after day 50 to see how many. That way they can see if they are to big to pass. How old is the stud? That is alot of litters. Was he tested for brucellosis before your girl was sent? |
Ugh, knew this would happen. The stud is 3 and half years old, and yes, he was. yes, I am planning on having ultrsounds, x-rays, and check ups done. |
Most studs are started around a year...so in 2 1/2 yrs this male has sired 95 litters..I would be more concerned about using an over used stud. Bitches do not come in season one or two a month..so he has to have been used 2 or 3 times in a week for some time...no wonder the stud owner recommended one breeding..probably had another bitch waiting to be bred...Best wishes |
One of my girls was also bred on February 24 and February 26. My count of 63 days puts the due date at April 28 to April 30 (unless I counted wrong). Anyways, good luck with your girl, she is awfully small. |

Sigh Wow, I just cannot be happy for you and your dog. I am very concerned for your dog. M Pennie is 6 months and 4 pounds, I look at her I cannot believe you bred such a tiny dog. Be prepared for a c-section. You say you have been educating yourself yet you bred her at a year and a half! You cannot even do any OFA testing (hips and knees, etc) until they are 2 years old. Everyone knows this. I would never breed a yorkie so young. Yorkies also mature slower, and they can continue to fill out up until 2 years of age. As for the stud owner, she is 100% wrong about getting more pups the more you breed them. That is a myth. And a male needs 48 hours to re-build sperm so You need to skip a day and breed again. Day 5 of her heat she was standing? that rarely happens so your girl must be further into her heat to have accepted him. Was she held in place for him or did he ties freely with her? I guess your going to do what you want since you already bred her before coming here and asking for advice. You say you knew this was going to happen (neg replies), but what do you expect. Advice at this point is moot. I hope she didn't get pregnant. and if your really set on breeding wait until she is older, have all the health tests done IF she gets big enough. She still may get a little bigger but I doubt it. |

I rreeaallyy should have just gone to google instead of this. ( i have gone to to google, duh, but ok whatever nvm). Anyway, today she is 51 days, and I scheduled an appointment with the vet to do an x-ray on the 20th. She is due on April 28th. Last night I felt a puppy kick! They really have grown bigger, when they were little things I felt 2, though I hope she's carrying a third up in her ribs (safer sizes with 3 pups). She's been eating more than normal (sometimes less or not at all though), definitely got bigger, and on her 5th week, she gained a pound! |
That is exciting, please keep us updated on her progress. |

I pray your Miley doesn't suffer for your decision. |

You obviously didn't get your bitch from a respectable breeder. No respectable breeder would allow anyone like you to have thier baby. I'm scared to think about where she comes from. The same type of puppy prison that your stud lives in. Clearly you cannot afford a c-section. *NEWS ALERT* If she needs a c-section it won't mater if there are three she will still need one. You didn't read that, did you? Even if she naturally whelps two she may still need one. 1)Your bitch is too small to breed 2) Your bitch isn't good enough to breed 3) You are not educated enough to breed 4) Your stud is not good enough to breed 5 YOU DON'T CARE ANYWAY. This is a train wreck getting ready to happen. You not caring what you were doing makes me sick. It's a live being, not intended to be used. |
You gals do realize that according to a previous thread, this person is only 11. I can't hardly fathom that is the truth...seems, odd. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pol...ml#post2771482 |
LOL...it's 11:09, does your mom know you're on the computer? http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/off...ml#post2736498 What's even scarier is that it seems this 11 year old has been attempting to advise other on the breeding process since she joined...at the whopping age of 10? |
...and this dog was a pet store/puppy mill dog. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ml#post2707483 Just keeps getting better, eh? Sorry, but I refuse to encourage and offer information to assist a child in breeding a too tiny, puppy mill dog. (YT should really have an 'age limit.') |
Was there a bunny in something? |

OMG!!!! So now my question is where are the parents of this child? If indeed she really is 11. Yet another example of why I would keep a close watch on young children when they are on the internet. Prime example of you NEVER know who's on the other side... |
