dock or not? advice? I am having a hard time with this decision. Are there any other breeders that don't dock the tails? I have a 1 forever home that already wants me to leave the tail natural. I know that AKC standard is to dock the tail. I am not sure what way to go with the rest of my babies??? I will have the dew claws done forsure. Would it be bad to leave the tails? maybe some of each? :animal-pa |
I am not a breeder nor do I show dogs, but if I had my choice I would not want the tail docked. My lil biewer Bogie of course has his tail and it is so beautiful. I wish it wasn't the standard for the yorkie, but what do you do? That would be a tough decision.good luck |
My preference is for docked tails. |
I also prefer the tails docked. My Sassy is due in a few days and her puppies will have the tails docked when they are 3 days old. I love the little tails:) |
I dont even know what an undocked yorkie tail looks like. If you feel strongly about not docking and your puppies will be pet onlys then just go with your gut. |
You're the breeder...your choice. :) I can tell you that if I was rescuing or whatever, I'd take a Yorkie with a full tail. But I would most likely only go to a breeder for an AKC registered Yorkie. And if I paid full price, I would expect the tails be docked. I personally wouldn't pay too much for a purebred Yorkie who is so off standard... I like the docked look. :) |
Dock or not the most important thing is if the dog will be loved or not . We rescued a mom and her 3 babies . Babies didn't had their tails docked and the found wonderful forever homes . Its not because a Yorkie have a full tail that he or she is not a purebred or not allowed for registration . |

Although I love Lucy's full tail, people are often curious about it. Why does she have a tail they ask me? Once someone told said:" She is mix for sure, she got a long tail". lol. I am still laughing at that one when I think about it. So in my opinion, it might discourage some buyer since it isn't the standard. It can be hard sometimes to found GOOD family for your puppy. I refused already a lot of buyers for many different reason so I wouldn't want to have an even smaller group to pick from. I think I would leave the tail on ONLY if someone ask me for. Again, this is just my opinion of coarse. |
Since it is the request of the new owner to be that they want the tail left I would leave it for them but would dock the others. |

I docked my babies because silkies just like Yorkies have to conform to the dock standard, if I have a special request then that puppy does not get docked. hugs, Carmen in nj |
I made my decision Thank you everybody for your imput. I have decided to stay within AKC standards and dock (except the one by special request) It is a difficult decision. I wish we could wait till they were older, more time for the forever familys to decide;) I am one that loves them either way.:animal-pa |
We have tails and no tails here and I still admit to loving seeing a stub tail wag. |

I prefer a docked tail. If I were looking for a pup, I would probably pass on it if the tail were not docked. |
I own both Biewers and Yorkies and MUCH prefer the docked tail. :) |
~I also prefer the docked tail, but not too short, just enough to cover the butt. Personally I've never seen a full tail on a yorkie. If I had somebody ask me not to dock, than I would give them what they want, and of course dock the rest. |
I would dock all my puppies tails as when they are born and when I dock them I can't tell at 3 days old what will stay in my home as a show dog and what will go as a pet. I conform to the standard and at 3 days old I just can't tell you which one would be considered pet quality so I would have to dock the tails. This is not to say I don't mind an undocked tail but as long as I breed and show all my puppies will have docked tails even if someone were to ask me to keep a tail. I'm glad I'm not the one who has to do this though. |
Standard or not I like the full tail and wish they would allow it. I think it's plain cruel to put a puppy thro such trama just to please those who say it's standard! Just my honest opinion. |
2 Attachment(s) I like full tail. :) |
Banned in Europe--- I have several lovely European import dogs with their full tails, which I feel enhance their beauty and expression. Even though the written standard in the US still calls for a docked tail, in actual practice it is left to the judge's discretion to accept or dismiss an undocked dog. It is my understanding that it is extremely rare to dismiss a dog for this, and I have seen Yorkies with full tails win at conformation shows. Depending on my mood I sometimes leave tails on. I have a puppy now that I may go ahead and show with his full tail. |

to dock or not? My vet says that it will be illegal to dock tails in Canada in the near future. As it is in Europe. He points out that it is purely cosmetic and very painful and traumatic for puppies! It is not like Yorkies are still chasing rats and need it to be removed/docked for health and safety! I don't know HOW people/breeders do it! I pay to have it done, but leave the vet's office so I can't hear the pups scream! I don't feel good about it at all! :mad:I do not dock if a client requests. More and more people/clients are asking about it, so maybe it will be outlawed soon.:) I look forward to the day!! I do not have the de-claws removed anymore, because same vet says in small dogs it is unnecessary. We have not had any problems so far! |

I'm sure that it *can* be very painful and traumatic for them if it's not done properly. When I had my last litter done, they were 3 days old and three of the four never even woke up. So if it was "tramatic," they slept right through it and never knew.:p I always find those types of comments very comical given that my experiences with docking have been so different. |
I think these Yorkies are stunning with their tails and when they walk in the ring it must be incredible to see: ...::: Welcome to Yorky Club :::... I love the full tail....:) |
The majority of yorkies over here now have natural tails, though some breeders do get around it by regestering their litters with the Irish kennel club. The docked tail does look smarter, but I must admit I did find it traumatic seeing it done and spent alot of time agonising over weather to dock or not. Unfortunatly to start with some judges were very biased against full tails when they banned breeders docking and left it to vets. Now with the ban its a more open competition which is why I'm looking at getting back into the ring in the hopefully near future. |
I prefer a docked tail but that's not really your question. I believe if you have one already spoken for, the new owner should be able to choose what they want. This past summer we had a litter of Australian Shepherds. The standard on them also is to dock the tails. Right at birth, one was spoken for by a lady in Germany. It's the standard there NOT to dock tails. She specifically asked for that one to not be docked so we only did all the others. She did end up choosing a second one also and I was concerned about the tail already being docked but she said (if I remember right) that it's not "illegal" to dock them, just not "preferred" and that she was fine with it. I guess you have to be to spend that much on travel to come get them plus the cost of the pups. :-) If you have a deposit on the "undocked" one, I think it's just fine to go with their wishes. |
