Unhappy never again!

Last week I get a call from my daughters friend step mom.She had broken her leg and was finding it difficult to care for their yorkie that they had bought from us earlier this year and wondered if i wouldnt mind caring for him for a week because she was finding it difficult to maneuver over the gated kitchen where they keep him.so over the weekend they had voiced concerns over the dog saying how he still isnt house trained they had been letting him potty on pads in the house and were tired of seeing these pads laying all over the house.I have advised them several times over the months he should be more than capable of pottying outside. We had set upfor monday evening for them to pick him up when we finally get a call saying they dont want him anymore they cant handle him.You would think they were talking about some out of control dog but i have watched him in the past never mind to say the last week and he has not had an accident ,barks only when he hears something but immediatly stops with a shhh.It makes me so angry of course they were all in love with the cute little 2 pound puppy neglect to train him for a year or just tire of him now that he is a 6lb adult.Never will i sell again to family or friends.Right now i am waiting for them to decide whether they will be giving him to their daughters mom or returning him to me ,I hope i get him back of course being friends i didnt make them sign a contract which i state in mine that if cant keep any longer breeder has the first right to the pup which i will buy back at an agreed amount.
I know stupid stupid couldnt sleep at all

I'm sorry that this is happening. I make even family sign a contract. Some think that I am mean, but I explain that business is business. I guess after I say that they understand because they shut up about it. I guess you can just take this as a learning experience. I do hope that you get him back. I know that you will have him trained in no time at all.

I would tell them that your rule is the dog comes back to you if the buyer can no longer care for the dog. Tell them you are sure you mentioned it when they took him. I would tell them since they neglected the training for so long he is going to need a lot of work training and maybe the person they are thinking of giving him to wont have the time to deal with training an adult dog And, you fear that he will be passed from person to person. When coming back to you he will get the proper training and find a home that has time to dedicate to him.

Good Luck! I hope you get the little guy back!

Well after hearing your story I hope they give him back to you so he can
be sure of having the home he so deserves. I guess once a breeder the
responsibilities never leave you. Worring about past litters must be
stressful. I guess the only good thing from this is you getting him back.
He certainly deserves more than he's being giving.

The best thing is that this little boy is in your possession......

One of the responsibilities of breeding is taking pups back that are not in the best environment and are unhappy. I don't think that family or friends have a corner on being irresponsible pet owners......I just think that people don't get the whole picture on the responsibility of owning a pet. All 12 week old pups are cute, everything the do is cute. Unfortunately, people don't understand that these pups grow up, some make grow up not so cute, a bit too big, etc. So, education falls on us and of course the vetting process.

I am pretty sure that I am not a normal person. I agree puppies are cute! But, I am strange in that I can't wait for my puppies to GROW UP! I prefer the adult dog so much more than the puppies! In that, I feel anyone giving up their dog doesn't deserve the dog anyways. I would think that you could find a 6lb. adult yorkie a forever home in a heart beat! If you were close, I would be knocking on your door. (except I dont' do males ) Yes, it still makes us angry, but that babe deserves better and I hope you get him back. The training wouldn't even be an issue in my eyes.

I hope you get him back. I would take everyone of my pups back if needed and if I was unable to keep them, I would feel better knowing I would find the perfect home for them.

I'm a stickler for a contract. I won't do anything without a contract..no matter who you are. I hope you get him back

While of course family and friends certainly are not the only ones that could be considered irresponsible it sure as heck makes it difficult for us who put ourselves in that situation.I just know this will affect my daughters friendship with their daughter which saddens me.
I tell all new potential owners that yorkies are more like toddlers and need a lot of care and supervision I dont suger coat anything for me personally the trade off is worth the time invested.
Unfortunatly i am begining to see they might have seen having a "yorkie" as a status symbol and not a loving pet.
Still waiting to hear from them .......

I do understand what you're saying.....very difficult for you. I've never placed a dog with family or friends.....although, my new families have turned out to be some of my best friends.

I posted somewhere on another thread.....Screening Puppy Buyers an article in AKC.....

Good luck in what every you choose for this puppy, I'm sure that you will do the best possible.

That is a great article for breeders and rescuers! It covers everything that I believe is important in placing pups.

Oh, you can find a home in a heartbeat. The problem is that so many people who want them are just like the ones she is dealing with now. They think they are getting a cute little stuffed animal that will not poop or pee in their home or yap.

We get the throw aways all of the time. They could not housebreak them, the kids dropped them and hurt them, someone is allergic ???? to them, they cannot afford vetting....the list goes on and on. No research...not a thought. They just wanted a cute little dog.

I'm with you on this. My contract says the dog comes back to me to be replaced. And family and friends, sign the contracts as well. And yes, there are many good homes who want an older dog that is trained and housebroken.

This had been the first time I sold to family or friends so I was unsure of how to handle it...yes I made a mistake.
The pup is going to have a trial weekend at the moms to make sure she can handle it...if she cannot they will be returning the pup to me.
