| I own what you would call a "tiny" and I love her to death -- she's the cutest and sweetes little thing ever and looks nothing like a RAT! My Katie Lyn weighs 2.6 lbs even. I did not pay a ridiculous amount for her either. I paid $1,200 for her and $1,000 for my 6 lb Maltese, Codie. Katie's breeder was not intentionally breeding for tinies, she just happened to have 1 tiny in her litter. Also, Katie (surprisingly) is MUCH more healthy then Codie. I've had more health problems with Codie since I have had him. Codie gets frequent ear infections (I have to keep a supply of ear drop medication in my house at all times). Also, Codie had a luxaed patella (his left rear leg) which required immediate surgery. In addition, Codie has had trouble with hypoglycemia -- I was so SHOCKED because he isn't tiny! He's a cutie pie at 6 lbs and my 2.6 little girl has never had trouble with hypoglycemia.I personally think it is wrong to breed any dog under 5 lbs period. 5 lbs is already a SMALL dog ... why should someone intentionally breed for anything smaller?

| its really ridiculous to only breed for tinies. sure there's a market for them. just like there's a market for anything. people like what they like. but realistically if the only yorkie you could purchase was a 3 lb and under, can you imagine what that would really be like...imagine trying to have them in a hectic show scheldule every weekend. imagine all the poor breeders always having extra heart aches and bills. imagine the poor dogs that would not make it to a healthy 15 yrs old. it's hard enough for a reputable breeder to find good stock as it is without spending their life savings, as many do, lol. but i'd hate to think that along with all the money i spent to try and find the kind of dogs i want to breed, that along with it would come huge vet bills, having to watch my females suffering during their whelp probably every time, and the agony of most likely losing alot more puppies at birth and soon after than if i were breeding within a little larger weight range. even though i breed within a 5-7 lb weight range, i still get a really small baby sometimes. and yes, they will be priced a little higher than a puppy within a standard weight range. this is due to the fact that it's most likely going to cost me alot more to raise that paticular baby in the first place. i'm going to aquire higher vet bills due to the extensive testing the extremely tiny puppy will need before it can be cleared to go. i'm also going to worry myself sick over it the entire time i have it. for those reasons i feel that it would not be unfair to ask 4-500 dollars more than i normally would for a puppy like that. but some of the prices i see out there that are just because they are tiny really bothers me. i mean 5-10,000 dollars is just too much for anyone to ask unless they are just trying to get rich quick. or get richer quicker. i would never pay that for one myself knowing what i know first hand from raising a couple of them. no way. now maybe if they were "benji" or "lassie" i would. i'd pay 10 grand for a multi talented tv and movie animal celebrity. but not for a yorkie or any breed of dog just because they were really small... |

| and i dont think tiny yorkies look like rats either. i think they are adorable. just like all yorkies are adorable to me. they all deserve loving homes. i did purchase a tiny yorkie for myself last year. and for a very reasonable price too. he was so cute and such a pleasure to have around. i knew i would never breed him, there was just no question about that. he was just my little man. he passed away this past april, didnt even make it to a full year old so i guess this subject kinda brought back memories for me. his siblings were all much bigger than him. i miss him so much. i guess i'm just one of those breeders who doesnt just have yorkies for breeding purposes. i enjoy them all. big, medium, or small. when i do breed my dogs, i try to breed within the standard though. not because i feel that there's any law saying that i have to, but because i feel its the right thing for me to do. |

| I think that Maltese are more fragel , than Yorkies, I know that they are known for Hypo problems.. As far as size for yorkies, I think that the 5 lbs are plenty small enough. I worry so about the tiny babies, Mine don't leave my house until 12-13 wks old. I want to make sure that they are as healthy as can be expected, before going to their families.

PinkMartini was kidding and she was saying 1lb or under would like a rat which is true. I agree they would be about the size of a rat, but much much cuter of course!

I am curious as to what size you think is okay for a yorkie? I definetly dont approve of purposely breeding tenny tiny dogs that end up unhealthy for life- I think it is cruel to the animal. I know you are very against that too and wanted to know what the smallest size you think is okay for a yorkie? I got a 2 1/2 lb yorkie who is now 10 months with no health problems (so far and hope to keep it that way). I would never breed her. I think she is a wonderful dog. Iwasnt even looking for a yorkie at the time I bought her. I just sort of happend to come across her one day and had to take her home, and I couldnt imagine the world without her. Is that too tiny?

| I agreed breeding exclusively for tinies is wrong. I think a 3 lb is small enough and you can get them without the necessity of breeding a 3 lb female. Breeding a female that is less than 5 lbs is just looking for trouble and I dont think is fair for the animal. Good breeders will breed for the standard. |

| Responsible breeders should always look for breeding healthy dogs before thinking about the weight of the puppies when they'll be adults . |

| Toby weighs 3 pounds and is 12 weeks, I must say when I started looking for a yorkie, I wanted one that would only get to be around 4 pounds. I love my baby and I guess I just don't want to see him grow up... He is so cute the way he is. But he will probably get to be 6 1/2-7 pounds. And I am happy with that too.
