7 Puppies! How soon to wean? Hi my Stella has had 7 puppies!!!! It was her first litter, she birthed with no trouble at all. Ive been feeding her 4 x small meals a day, along with goats milk. the pups are thriving, and are real fat little things. How soon can i start to wean the pups who are 2 weeks and 2 days old, eyes are open and they are very active and weeing on training mat already! I just want to help mum out as she is quite scratched on her teats (ive gently filed the pups nails) but feel sorry for Stella, who is a very good mum. Your views would be much appreciated regarding weaning earlier. thanks

She should be eating 4 or 5 good sized meals a day......At about age 3 weeks you can start helping her out by letting the pups lap goats milk.....

As long as mom has plenty of milk I would wait until pups are walking. I usually start weaning mine around 3 1/2 to 4 weeks. With larger litters the pups tend to start walking sooner and are ready to wean sooner. It is so very important to make sure momma is getting lots of food because with a litter of that size it is a huge strain on the momma. Make sure the momma always eats about 4 times a day. It is especially important that the momma eats a big meal first thing in the morning and right before bedtime. I give my mommas 1/2 calcium tablet in the morning and 1/2 at night. It is important to keep the puppy's nails cut on the puppies. I just use small fingernail clippers to keep the sharp points off. Good luck with your babies.

hi thanks for all your replies.....she gets calcium tablet daily and scrambled eggs 2-3 times a week, boiled chicken and puppy food (dry biscuits) and this is fed 4 times a day... she is a greedy dog anyway, and eats my other 2 dogs dinners if they dont finish!!! So she is getting plenty of food! Will wait till next sunday when pups are 3 weeks old to start weaning them, going to worm them allthen as well. ive already filed the pups nails, hoping this helps mum a bit, thanks again for all your help. x

Holding Eclampsia at bay, so it never comes at all… forget everything about giving tums, cottage cheese, cheese, icecream.. etc. It’s useless. The body needs the calcium to be delivered with the correct ratio of Vit D and Phosphorus or it doesn’t absorb it, it’s useless. Pet Cal has this correct ratio. Another thing that has it is, believe it or not.. a scrambled whole egg! Of course everyone knows not to start calcium until the litter is whelped.. no giving it to PG bitches… I do give some calsorb during whelping If things slow down on a larger litter, but never before whelping. Make it a general practice to scramble your bitch an egg every day, and depending on weight, give ½ to a whole pet tab per day. I gave it to a 8 lb bitch ½ in the morning ½ at night…this is the “daily dose” for about a 20 lb dog who was NOT nursing a litter…so just fine for ½ the size, but nursing a litter. I would grind up the pet tab in the food processor and put the powder in the egg when I scrambled it.
