| pregnant and flea meds Before she became pregnant she was on Frontline plus. Fiona is due the second week of nov. I am worried that she might have fleas. I haven't seen any fleas on her, but today and yesterday she was iching a lot. Is there anything I can do to help get rid of them or prevent this? I do not want to harm the babies. |

| Ask your vet. My female cat was pregnant and had fleas and I just washhed her with dawn because thats all I thought I could do. Anyway she still had fleas and the kitten got them. The vet said I could use flea medds if I used the right kind. He gave me advantage for the mother that was nursing and told me to put 2 drops on the kitten. He said that was safe. Fleas can kill a baby kitten so I had to do something

The only two products I can think of that's safe is fossil shell flour ( food grade D.E.) and cedar oil..... Natural Flea Control and Tick Remedy. Official TripleSure Site. Flea and Tick Natural Animal safe pesticides organic pet friendly insecticides pest control Buy Diatomaceous Earth to kill fleas, ticks, bed bugs and parasites naturally It's getting cold out now so the fleas outside would be less of a problem. If they are in the house then vacuuming is the best and safest way to go. Here is one study about this....... Dutch journal Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata: The old upright is not only lethal to adult bugs, but it completely wipes out their young. Scientists from Ohio State University had set out to determine what additional measures might be needed to kill a bunch of Hoovered-up fleas: burning, freezing, poisoning, maybe even a little good old fashioned stomping. But it turns out that getting sucked into a vacuum bag does the whole job. The researchers were so surprised by the results, they repeated the study several times. In each experiment, they sprinkled a kitchen carpet with 100 cat fleas, either adults or juveniles. And they found that the vacuum snuffed out pretty much all of them. Good luck and I hope she's feeling better......

| I think frontline plus is safe for pregnant dogs, But personally, I would use the dawn dish soap. and make sure you rinse thuroughly. But you also have to wash the bedding pand clean thuroughly. the dawn will only rid her of the fleas that are on her at the time of the bath. |

| This in from an insecticide factsheet on the use of fironil as in Frontline..... Effects on Reproduction Frontline and fipronil also disrupt reproduction and development. In the study mentioned in the preceding paragraph, a single dose of Frontline approximately doubled the time between periods of estrus in female rats.18 (Estrus describes the time when a female is able to conceive; in many mammals this occurs in cycles.19) Higher doses of Frontline also reduced the number of female rats who were able to become pregnant following mating.18 Studies conducted as part of fipronil’s registration process also documented effects on reproduction. Offspring of rats fed fipronil during pregnancy were smaller than offspring of unexposed rats. In addition, male offspring from exposed mothers took longer than offspring of unexposed mothers to mature sexually. These effects occurred at all but the lowest dose level tested. In another study, fipronil reduced litter size, fertility, and the survival of offspring. These effects occurred at the highest dose level tested.20 When pesticides are toxic to the nervous system, exposure during pregnancy might damage the developing nervous system of the unborn child. The first experiment mentioned in the preceding paragraph was designed to test for this kind of effect. It showed that the offspring of rats exposed to fipronil had smaller brains than the offspring of unexposed rats. (See Figure 4.) In addition, the fipronil exposure caused a variety of behavioral changes. All of these effects occurred at the highest dose level tested.21,22 If anyone would like to read more it's here..... http://www.pesticide.org/fipronil.pdf

| I cut out all of that stuff when Kalina was pregnant. She seemed to have the "itchies" near the end of her pregnancy but I didn't notice fleas and her puppies are flea-free. I didn't put her back on to any flea meds or heartworm preventative until the puppies were completely weaned - just to be on the safe side.

| Thanks, I didn't know that. Are there big differences between the heartworm meds as far as side effects?

| I'm lucky that my dogs have never had fleas. I would hate to deal with fleas, especially considering the Yorkie coat. However, I have always used flea meds because there are a lot of fleas in this area.

| Intercepter is the counterpart of Sentenal but, with out the flea meds. I prefer this stuff because it's prescribed according to weight. I usually don't cease heartworm when she's gonna be bred, then put her back on them when pups are 2 weeks old.

| thank you Thank you so much!!!! Sorry it took so long for me to come on and thank everyone. I was hopping that it was just an itch, but just to make sure I used Dawn on my little Fiona. I filled up the bathtub with about an inch of soapy water and started washing her from her neck down. I found one dead fea on her aftewards. I don't like fleas! She becoming so big I do not want to stress her out anymore. I think I'm going to bring the father of her babies over to visit everyday.... He is on his flea meds and if they bite him they die right??? Maybe that will keep the situation under control for the next couple of months. |

YT 1000 Club Member | Here is a recipe for flea prevention 1/2 oz (15ml) base oil I use sweet almond oil 4 drops clary sage essential oil 1 drop citronella essential oil 7 drops peppermint essential oil and 3 drops lemon essential oil Store it in a dark glass bottle. Apply 2-4 drops to the back of the neck, chest, legs, and tail base you can also add a few drops to a bandanna or cotton collar. I use this on my three and it is completely safe for them. I just started using it on my Friday and she was just bred. I can say that this blend kills fleas because I gave Friday a bath and comb her with a flea comb, only found one and put a drop of the oil blend on it within a few second it was dead. Oh and I got the recipe from this book. Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals by Kristen Leigh Bell
