| newborn puppies my female(Kiwi) delivered 4 puppies last night between 9p.m and 1 a.m. we lost one of the puppies but the other three seem to be doing well. Kiwi will start panting for no apparent reason(like she did when contractions started), is this normal?

| Congratulations on your new litter. I am sorry you lost one of them. It is normal for new mommas to do some panting after having puppies. You do need to monitor her temperature closely for the first week because of the possibility of her developing a uterus infection. Did you take her to the vet for a cleanout shot? That is usually recommended, especially if you did not see all the placentas pass. When the pups suckle that will stimulate the uterus to continue to contract and as the bitch produces milk that will raise her body temperature and make her pant more. You want the pups to keep warm but you do not want the room temperature too hot because if the momma get too hot then that will slow down her milk production. I recommend a heating pad that will just cover half the whelping box. Good luck with your babies. |

| Just FYI.... we just had a litter of Australian Shepherd puppies almost 8 weeks ago and I noticed mom panting and shivering a little the day after the birth. Took her temp and it was slightly elevated so I took her to the vet along with the pups to get their tails docked. She ended up having an early case of mastitis. That could possibly be causing your mom to do this. Have you felt her teets?

| With mastitis the teats will get red and hard. Usually the back teats are the ones that are first effected. It is important to keep an eye on them. If she starts showing signs of mastitis then she will most likely need an antibiotic. |

| What she said! I had no experience with that so the vet showed me and had me feel around so that I knew what it was like. Her's weren't red (yet, maybe) but it was the couple back ones and they were hard and lumpy. She got antibiotics and probiotics and puppies got probiotics too. It cleared up very quickly.

| I highly recommend you get her to the vet for a POP/Oxcytocin shot (clean out shot). They do pant after having puppies, hormones are crazy right now. Panting with unusual behavior is something you should monitor closely
