| Gross Question I have a litter that is 4 weeks old today and Momma is very obsessed with eating their pee and poop, is this normal? If she is out of the Xpen and sees they have pooped she whines to get in and of course I clean it up but she does her best to get to it before I do. Is there anything I can do while I am away or at night? I am sure this is her way of keeping them clean but it is very gross. |

| give the mother some vitamins; maybe she's missing some vitamins; because she's feeding the litter and she tries to get it from their poop. give her some nutrical or any other chewable vitamins

| This is normal. just as Barbara said, she will continue to eat it until they start eating more food, then she will stop. it doesn't mean she is lacking anything. it's just what mama's do. |

| Thanks for the response, I am so glad this is normal. It didn't bother me as much in the begining, but she has become obsessed so I hoped it was just the mom thing and not her developing a very bad habit. My husband tried to tell me I was overreacting (LoL I have an extremely weak stomach). |

| My girls is still eating her boys poop, he is 7 weeks old and has been on food for over a week. As soon as he starts to go, she goes over to him and starts licking his but until he goes and then eats it. Is this right?

| It's an animal thing. At first, because a puppy doesn't have the ability/reflex to eliminate on it's own. As it grows older, the mother is concerned with keeping the den clean, so her puppies scent cannot be identified by preditors. I have a mother and her 3 year old daughter, mom still tries to diaper her. And daughter still attempts to nurse on her mother.

| They normally have stopped by this time, but I would not worry yet. He is still very young. You just have an over-conscientious momma.

| Very normal and you'll wish she was still doing it when you have to go on poop patrol and do all the cleaning yourself..lol You no sooner get the pads cleaned up when they've went and messed again

| What I hate even more than the mom eating the poop is when the pups start doing it. I think some pups pick up the habit from their mom. |

| When should they stop? or when should I worry? I try to grab it before she gets to it and when he is trying to go and she is bothering him, I try and pull him away. I know I read on a site that at 7 weeks I can start the potty training process, is that correct.
