Thanks are actually do to my mentor in Texas. I knew that I had a litter somewhat like yours (not as large), but she was assisting me and I called her for advice. We were on the phone as I was typing. This lady has been in yorkies for 45+ years and is 81 years young. She's whelped more puppies and encountered more things than I will ever experience.

With a litter the size of yours. I strongly recommend you order the following:

Revival Animal Health - Oral Cal Plus #60210-493

Keep it on hand. Speak to your vet about calcium supplement tablets

This is what I suggest that you do to help prevent eclampsia:

forget everything about giving tums, cottage cheese, cheese, icecream.. etc. It’s useless. The body needs the calcium to be delivered with the correct ratio of Vit D and Phosphorus or it doesn’t absorb it, it’s useless. Pet Cal has this correct ratio. Another thing that has it is, believe it or not.. a scrambled whole egg! Of course everyone knows not to start calcium until the litter is whelped.. no giving it to PG bitches… I do give some calsorb during whelping If things slow down on a larger litter, but never before whelping. Make it a general practice to scramble your bitch an egg every day, and depending on weight, give ½ to a whole pet tab per day. I gave it to a 8 lb bitch ½ in the morning ½ at night…this is the “daily dose” for about a 20 lb dog who was NOT nursing a litter…so just fine for ½ the size, but nursing a litter. I would grind up the pet tab in the food processor and put the powder in the egg when I scrambled it.

Do the above and make sure she gets at least an hour a day of sunshine for that vitamin D.

By the way I contacted my mentor and informed her of your litter of 6. She was jealous, she had a litter of 5 yesterday morning; 3 boys and 2 girls.

I do have calcium tablets on hand and I will give her a scramble egg everyday(fresh from our chickens) I will order the Oral Cal Plus. I do have the calsorb...can I give her this as well? This is Gina's 2nd litter of 6 puppies so I know its really important to keep her calcium intake up. She loves the cottage cheese and I mixed it in her puppy food and she gobbles it up. This helps in getting her to eat all of her food. Thanks for the information. This really helps.

She had a nice litter as well. I just can't believe I have 5 boys in a row. It was so nice of them to let their only sister go first. Gina's first litter she had 4 girls and 2 boys. Tell your mentor congratulations on her litter!

Calsorb is fine, but the other is not as distasteful. A bit more expensive.

Wow, your mentor sounds like an awesome lady; 81 years young & still whelping litters too, I see from your post below. I've seen how you've been here to help those in need, it seems that she has taught you well and you are following in her footsteps.

You haven't provided enough information to give answers to. You need to contact your vet.

All is dependent on the strength of the contractions. How long has she been having the contractions...are the mild, strong? How often? If strong how many has she had....

Water sac is normal. Danger signs you should be looking for is Constant hard labor for more than an hour with nor results

Green or odorous discharge from the vulva prior to the first pup being born.

An interval of 2 hours between pups with occasional hard labor

Is it possible to over-supplement calcium for nursing moms? I ask because I do not want to accidentally overdose Layla with the Oral Cal Plus, and don't know what dosage she will need.
