How many litters should they have? Lucy is going to have her 4th litter tomorrow , she is going to be 5 years old in November. It will be her last litter as I am retiring her after. I was wondering what is your opinion on the subject. How many litters and at what age do you retired your females?

I retire my bitches at 5 typically especially if they've had 4 litters. If I bred more than what I do that is what I would do. I don't believe in letting my bitches have more than 4 litters if they are healthy and usually 5 is when I would retire them but of course that is just my opinon. Donna

I usually go by a lot of things. If they don't like becoming a Mom, then I retire.. even at 2 yrs old. If they are healthy and love being a Mom, then I retire at 6, but always before their 7th birthday. If whelping takes a lot out of them, then I retire. There are many I have retired at 4 or 5. You can tell by the look in their eyes if they're having a good time or not..

Thanks for your comments. That answer my question. My mind is already set on Lucy. She is a great mom and is very healthy but she isn't registered and I am retiring her because of that too. I also think that 4 litters is enough for her. So she'll get neuter in a few months...I of coarse also think that every dog is different. Today is day 63... Lucy's eating, digging in her box a little, her temperature is a little lower since yesterday but not much... I'll start a puppy watch thread soon hopefully...

| Good for you. I retire at 5 years and spay them. They aren't bred until 18 months to 2 years, by that time they've obtained their Championship.....so that leaves 3 years of breeding, usually 3 or 4 litters. I've found that breeding them after the age of 5 you're asking for problems. Retiring them at 5 gives them a long happy life of just being princesses, that is well deserved.
