Ultrasound or pregnancy test? Ultrasound or blood pregnancy test- Which do you consider more reliable for pregnancy confirmation? I just need to get some opinions before making my decision on which route to go. Thanks!

I rely on patience. I treat every bred female as if she was pregnant and after about 5 or 6 weeks I know if she is or is not. Of course, I know some people like to do tests but I find that the trip to the vet can be very stressful for the expectant momma and I don't think my curiosity is worth putting the female as risk. I know many will disagree with me.

| Ok, I'll admit, I'm clueless, Pregnancy test?????????? I usually take my girls in a week before their due date for an x-ray. But, by then I know that they're pregnant, I just want to know how many and what I have to contend with.

I have done the ultra sound before and the x-rays. Personally, I feel that the ultra sound was a waste of money. They couldn't tell me how many to expect. The x-ray was much better and worth the money. I could tell more from the x-ray than I could the ultra sound. I know that it's frustrating because one minute you think they are pregnant and then the next they don't look or act it. Trust me, time will tell. Save your money for the tail docking and dew claw removal if you plan on having the vet do it.

Yes, they do actually do a pregnancy test for dogs! A lot of vets I called had never even heard of it, which is odd because over half of them around here do it! I have decided to go with the ultrasound because it is going to cost the same either way. I think the price is pretty reasonable- $35. I am willing to spend that simply because she took me on a roller coaster last time I bred her because she had a false pregnancy. I just don't wanna go through that again!

I have read one instance where someone had the blood pregnancy test done and it came back negative but the female ended up being pregnant so I am not too sure about its accuracy. Even if it comes back that she is pregnant you still have the possibility that she could absorb her pups.

Although I'm not a breeder, I'd probably go with an x-ray if anything unless the u/s is very cheap through your vet. I guess it also depends on when you want to do it. They are easier to count on x-ray.

No puppies :( Well, once again we have no puppies according to the vet. Now I am not sure where to go from here because she has had one litter of healthy puppies (early last year) and now two breedings with no puppies. Is there ANY slight chance that she might have taken later than what I thought and still be pregnant? This is so discouraging

The first male that she bred with, and had puppies with was my own male that was killed by another dog. The male that I bred her with these last two times was owned by someone else, but he was supposedly proven. I am now kind of wondering if I was scammed by that dog's owner. Is it likely that she would be having these problems after already having one litter? Or does it sound like it might be more a of a problem with the male? I will definitely be using my own male next time- he is just too young right now.

Does your contract entitle you to another breeding? If so, the stud owner has had a sperm count done. How old is the stud? I know of some breeders that use their studs at 7 months just to prove them.....

If a stud dog has not been proved by producing a litter (listed in the AKC Stud Dog Register), the burden of proof of fertility is with the stud dog owner.
