YorkieTalk Newbie! | 16 month old Yorkie still has not had heat Hi, I own a 16 month old Yorkie and she has not come into heat yet. The vet seems to think that she is just a late bloomer. She is almost 5 lbs and has a slender body, does her size have anything to do with it? Has anyone ever experienced this? Thanks in advance, Tia |

| This isn't uncommon at all! My breeder had a bitch that didn't go in to heat until she was 20 months! |

| My Yorkie is almost 12 months and just started her first heat. Anyone have information to help with the decision of breeding her one time? A little nervous about it so want to be sure.

| She is still too young. How much does she weigh? You have plenty of time to research breeding and get her checked out before you make that decision. It is recommended to breed females on the second heat or when they are at least 18 months old. |

How much sun does she get. That is also a contributing factor.

YorkieLover30's dog is having her first heat at 12 months so I doubt she had a silent heat prior to that. Most of my females have come in heat around 8 to 10 months for their first heat.

Sun is a source of vitamin D and has very much to do with hormones.....it also, is a factor in the boys being sexually potent. I learned this through canine reproduction seminars and through my reproduction vet. Most animals, human and otherwise require sunshine... It wasn't my intention to direct the post to you just adding on to yours.....and directed it at the OP

You will get some vitamin D even if the sun have to go through the window. There is no life.. without sun.

In addition boys sperm count will weaken if not getting enough sun. Rendering him unable to inpregnate a female...not meaning he can't do the deed, just not father a litter.

| The recommendation is 18 months or 2nd heat cycle. However, there is the maturity factor that fits into the equation too. If the female is not mature enough one may want to wait until the 3rd heat cycle.....
