yorkie 53 days along pleas help with ????
 

hello yorkie talk family. I am the proud new owner of two 2 year old yorkies. A female named Heav'ne and a male named Legacy. Heav'ne is 53 days pregnant and she has started spending lots of time under my bed and she seem to be scratching and digging in my wood floors. i know that full term means 60-63 days so my question is should she be digging already. She has a whelping box but she refuses to stay in it. When my husband tries to get her from under the bed she growls at him. She spends maybe 3 hours a day just laying under the bed. My other question is because she is a bigger yorkie around 10 pounds will she have a bigger litter. I know you all may be saying why would you breed a yorkie that is not within the standards but to answer that question, both dogs belonged to my neighbor who's drug habit made it hard to care for them so I took them off of her hands. When I first got them Heav'ne was already pregnant. I was told by my neighbors husband that the dogs tied on May 11th. I have since had Legacy fixed to prevent this from happening again. Heav'ne has a xray scheduled in five days. That was the earliest I could get her in for an appointment. I really love them already even though I've only had them for about a month. They are akc registered as they gave me all the dogs papers. I may need help when it comes to whelping so I am asking anyone who can answer my questions without being harsh to please check in on me as I will posting daily. First of all, welcome to Yorkie Talk. It sounds like you have your hands full. It is very possible the previous owner was way off on the days that the dogs bred. Females are in heat for 21 days and it is quite possible for them to breed over a 10 day period if left unsupervised. First of all, you will need to watch her constantly. Most females will not want to stay willingly in the whelping box, they would rather hide under a bed. Are you feeling the puppies move? If so how long have you felt movement? Can you tell if the pups are still being carried high or have they dropped? Have you taken mommas temperature? Some females start digging and nesting several days ahead of whelping. Do you have a exercise pen you can confine the female to? She need to be someplace where you can watch her but also where she feels safe and secure. You don't want the male around when she is whelping.

I do see something moving when she is laying down on her side but whn I feel her i just feel little movemnt. I cant tell if she has dropped but i can tell you she has really gotten large over the past week. She wont let me take her temperture but I have has success with pettemp thermomter that goes in the ear. Her nipples has also gotten really big but I haven't seen any milk yet. She licks herself alot also. I do have a baby playpen that resembles a dog playpen except it's plastic and not metal. Legacy has also started fighting her. Should they be seperated?

I just took her temperature using pet-temp ear theromometer and her temp was 98.5.

If he is fighting with her then it would be best to separate them. You don't want to risk her hurting the pups. You will have a lot of work ahead of you. You just want to make sure the momma is kept calm. Don't put her someplace where she will be jumping up and down and stressing out. When the puppies drop you should be able to feel pups moving down low in the groan area. Of course if she is carrying a lot of puppies then sometimes the puppies are already carried pretty low. If the movement is just light then she probably still has more time to go. Do you know if the previous owner left them unsupervised throughout her heat cycle? Did he know how long she had been in heat when he saw them tied? Without knowing these answers then you could be in for a long puppy watch. What are you feeding the momma now?

i am feeding her wellness puppy food. wet and dry. I give her cottage cheese everyother day. she has eaten today with no problem. the prevous owner said that he did witness them tie for thirty mintues. I tried lstening for heartbeats but it seems to be a lot of different beats some slow some fast some loud and some low.

At this point all you can do is watch her closely. If you have any specific questions we will be glad to help. You can learn a whole lot just by going through the breeder section and reading. Please keep us updated. Good luck at the vets.

I myself am a newbie so I can't offer any advice, but my dog Emma is 55 days today (she tied on the 9th of May) and I can tell you some of the things she is doing. Yesterday she wouldn't eat and spent the entire day under the couch except to go to the bathroom just a couple of times and in the morning her temp was at 97.9 but by evening it went back up to 99.7. Today she is eating and has been up and around the majority of the day but she has been digging a little her vulva is a little swollen and her temp is 99.9 and I won't check it again till tonight. Her milk came in 3 days ago. I also listen to the heartbeats and I believe I hear 6 and they are moving quite a bit. She has dropped (they were up under the ribs) they are real low. I have been reading alot on Yorkie Talk and have learned so much. Emma is a Yorkie Poo and weighs 9.5lbs. I sit in anticipation everyday and am so excited I can't hardly see straight. Please keep posting I can't wait to hear how she does.

It looks like both of you will be having pups around the same time. Keep in mind that if momma does not eat and her blood sugar is a little low then her temperature will run lower. I always recommend giving a little Nutri-cal if the momma is off her food.

congrats Emma and I hope all goes well. What does the hearteats sound like? I hear so many sounds going on inside her. Did you take Emma for an xray to determine the numer of pups?

I listened to our babies' heartbeats all the time. It is very fast, and sounds kind of far away. You can listen to mama's heartbeat, so you have something to compare it to.

Then put the stethescope or whatever you're using on her sides, and be in a very quiet room. :rolleyes:

Thank you so much for the advice, I will give her some nutri-cal just talked to my neighbor and she has some. It is funny how today she is up and running around back to her pre-preggo ways (Maybe this is her second wind). The babies heartbeats are a lot faster than hers and for awhile I thought she was only having two because that is all I could hear, it has just been the last couple days since she dropped that I could hear the others, probably because they were up under the ribs. But I do have a question and I know people like to talk about things they have no business talking about so here I go Can you tell a dog is dilated like you can a person? I hate to sound stupid but an aquaintance asked me if I had checked her to see if she was dilated. This is something I never would have dreamed of so I was suprised to hear the question. Anyway it will be fun to have someone going through this at the same time. Maybe it will be the same day I was kinda hoping Emma would wait till day 60 which is on the 9th as that is My Birthday (I couldn't ask for a better present)

Hi, welcome to YT and congrats on the upcoming litter. Great job on posting the belly pics........from the looks of them she doesn't see to have dropped just yet so you probably have some time for more reading up on whelping. If you do are not able to keep an eye on her and/or are not keeping her confined to an xpen or play pen of sorts, then do something to block all sides of getting under the bed. You sure don't want her beginning her whelp under there and not be able to get her or her pups out from under. We taped cardboard around our bed a couple of years ago when we had a pregnant female.

I did just hear two heartbeats. They must e very large pups if it's only two because she is very big and over 10pounds. Maybe there is more because i see lots of movement in different areas of her stomach. I will find out next week when she has her xray. I have noticed her licking herself a lot. There is some dried up particles around her vulva could it be here mucus? Also she is breathing very rapidly. I will send a video of her breathing

Pregnant females will have a clear gooey discharge and it will increase as she further along.

From the looks of her belly, I'd say she is having more than just two. My first litter 2 years ago was with a 9-10 lb female; she had a litter of four. I'm going to guess that for your girl also. I also tried listening for heartbeats back then; though I could definitely hear them, I had no idea if I was listening to one, two, or more............only the xray could tell me how many pups there were. I'm hoping to do it all again here in August. It's a bit to early to be sure, but things are looking promising. :)
Though a bigger female is better able to carry a larger litter, I don't think the size of the female is a factor in how many puppies she might have, but rather how many of her eggs get fertilized & not reabsorbed.

Can I get her groomed before she whelps. She has very long hair on her stomach and her nails are getting long.

They both look sweet. Thanks for sharing pictures. When you get a chance you can trim the hair on her belly. I just use a little pair of scissors and carefully cut off the belly hair.

Aww, she looks either like my Lucky-boy (same coloring, only bigger) OR like my Lexie (whom I don't have any longer), about the same size, only lighter in color.:p

Saw your question on grooming............I wouldn't take her anywhere for a full grooming session at this point. You can trim the hair on her belly yourself and if you aren't able to do her nails by yourself, I'm sure you can take her to have those done......just don't leave her anywhere. It might stress her out to much & we don't want that at this point.

Legacy weighs 5 pounds. He is such a character. She wont keep still for me to use scissors. Can I use clippers on her stomach?

Yes, a lot of people just shave the underside. Just be careful to not cut it to close.

well the only way I knew my pup (which wasnt a yorkie) was in labor... she started having some blackish discharge and would not leave my lap... she was whining alittle on and off. Within hours she had started pushing. I never saw any difference in her like dilating or anything. She did quit eating so I gave her nurti-cal and syringe fed her water.

Cassie weighs 10 lbs, and I swore there were more than two pups in there (the u/s and x-ray showed 2).

I would feel movement way down, and higher up in her abdomen, but she had one on each side, so it was the same puppy. They're wiggle worms. :rolleyes:

They weighed 5.1 oz. and 5. 2 oz.

Yes. I use mustache trimmers simply because they are easier for me to maneuver on their belly. It will help the puppies to be able to latch on better when there's not hair in the way. If you have nail trimmers, do those as well.
