| "AKC" inspection Hello all you knowledgeable people. What is an "AKC" inspection and when do they do it? Is it just if you have a kennel? Is it if you register your pups? How often do they do it and why do they do it? Is it a requirement for something? |

♥ Catherine My Love ♥ Donating Member | AKC inspection The AKC inspects breeders and anyone who makes registration transactions (25 a year or more). So, if you own or co-own a bitch that has had a litter that is registered with the AKC, it is possible to be inspected. The generally accepted rule is that the AKC will inspect breeders who have 7 litters in one year (the breeder gets put on a list to be inspected). But, inspections can also come in response to complaints . The inspection is basically a check to see that a breeder is in compliance with AKC rules - including paper work, care of the dogs, identification of the dogs, and proper registration. Basically, they inspect your records, the conditions where you keep the dogs, and sometimes they do DNA tests on puppies to verify documented parentage. Here is a good website with some first-hand informaiton from someone who was inspected. How to Survive an AKC Inspection

♥ Catherine My Love ♥ Donating Member | forgot As far as how often, that totally depends on their resources and the necessity of the inspection. As to why, the AKC does it to ensure that breeders are following the rules. If you don't pass the inspection, you can be temporarially or permanently barred from registering with the AKC. Most commonly the problem is in poor record keeping (from looking at the AKC suspension list, most of the time, people don't even have records to show the inspector). The AKC inspections are a requirement by the AKC - a sort-of self-policing thing to make sure that the AKC rules are upheld.

| and to add... They dont give you any warning in advance before they knock at your door. So its always better to have all records in order and in easy reach and everything well maintained at all times. If you do not let them in to inspect, you can be suspended right then and there. Some inspectors are more forgiving than others.

| AKC Inspections A good friend of mine was just inspected. AKC actually called him to schedule a time. The Rep was really nice and was travelling from GA to FL and she had two she wanted to do in one day, so she called ahead and asked what time was good. |

| Thanks to all of your responses. I was wondering if only breeders with kennels were inspected but I see that according to your responses, it is the number of litters per year. Your such helpfull people. |

| Sometimes its not the numbers of litter per year either. My friend got inspected randomly. She hadnt had a litter that year and no complaints were filed. So you just never know.
