Help for new breeder of Yorkies and new to site Hello everyone I am new to the site and from England, I see that most of you are from America. Well I had a litter of puppies 6 days ago all went well, 2 girls, 2 boys. One of the boys was always small, the mother is a small dog but he seemed to be thriving. Over the last 2 days I have noticed he is not keeping up with the the others. I have to get him to latch on and hold him there whereby he does suckle, but if I let go he falls off. I have been helping him with this for 2 days now and wonder if I am doing the right thing or is there something else I can do. The other 3 are quite a bit bigger and therefore a bit bulliesh to him (survival of the fittest ). I have weighed him and he is putting on weight but he looks so weedy. Any suggestions anyone. Fantastic site by the way.

Welcome to Yorkie Talk and congratulations on your new litter. It sounds like you are doing the right thing by making him attach. Do you get up during the night also to make sure he is nursing? It could be that even though he appears to be nursing, he might not be nursing long enough or strong enough to get enough nutrition. You might need to also supplement him with a bottle or dropper. Do you have Nutri-drops available over there? They work good for a weak puppy. Here is an interesting article that might also be useful. I have used the glucose solution they mention on small puppies and I really felt that it helped. http://www.showpapillons.com/formula.htm It is also possible the puppy could have a small hole in the roof of its mouth (cleft palate) that prevents it from sucking well. I do wish you the best with your new litter and I pray they all do well.

Thanks for your comments, the puppy is still growing albeit very slowly. We in the family have been making a very concious effort to ensure that he is getting some of the best teats before the larger ones get on and it is paying off. I did also supplement him for a while with lactol in drops, but have stopped this now. I am now getting worried about all of them when I weighed them yesterday they had lost a few grams each. I am not sure the mother is drinking enough how can I make her drink, she hadly ever touches the water, any suggestions. Perhaps I am worrying too much do puppies sometime lose weight. They are a 10 days now. The look healty shiny coats etc.
